I installed a Athlon Mobile 2600+ in my computer this week. I have a Soyo kt400 dragon ultra MB.

The question is.... when I unplug my computer (moved all my internals to a new case last night), the bios goes back to very basic settings. Does not recognize the cpu (it normally doesn't because it is a mobile) but I thought that once I had the BIOS set it would stay at the user defined settings. The BIOS settings even revert back to enabling the sound on the mobo (which I disabled due to the fact I have a sound card).
Is this a cmos battery issue or something else. It will be a real drag if every time I unplug the psu i have to re-set the bios.
Also..there is a 5v Standby voltage indicator on the mobo that is lit (led) when the psu is plugged in.

Yes it's the battery.

It's generally a bad idea to use a surge strip to turn off a PC because the battery doesn't have the opportunity to recharge. The strip turns off all power to the box.

The batteries aren't rechargeables. In early AT days (pre-1987 I'd say) they were, but it's been non-rechargeable Lithium cells ever since.

Ok, im gonna try and replace the battery. Although, i found out that after talking to a computer geek friend of mine (no harm intended:p ) that he said some mobo's reset everything when you unplug the powersupply (or you have a power outage for example). I will try a new battery first, and then if that doesn't work, heck, maybe a new motherboard. It's only money:D

ROFL! Well technically money does grow on trees... Cuz trees = wood, wood = paper, paper = money...:D

Are you sure? I've never heard of a mobo that resets everything because of a power outage/unplug... That's what the battery is there for.

seems like your problem started when you swapped out the CPU - you sure that CPU is compatible with your mobo? I was building a machine last week and the BIOS will reset (or oftentimes you need to reset) the BIOS if you're trying a CPU that isn't compatible

here (http://www.soyogroup.com/kb/kbdesc.php?id=16) is the link to check maybe - hope it helps?

Well...
Went to the store and bought a new battery (cmos battery) and put the new one in.
Seems to work now. Hurray:D
Measured the old battery's voltage and it came in at around 2.24 or so (supposed to be 3.0v).
Can't believe it was that simple.:p

Oh, rmanet, you are correct in the fact that my cpu is not "compatable". Running a Mobile Athlon in a desktop system. For overclocking. Out of all the research I did before doing this I hadn't heard of a BIOS reset issue until mine cropped up....

Yes some motherboards have this behavior. So far, the ones I have seen do this are the ones which have dead CMOS batteries or unstable BIOS versions.
