I need diagnostic utilities to find the cause of random crashes when using IE, network/cable modem problems, general random crashes and crashes when SETI@Home is running.

Help!

I faintly remember something about Norton AntiVirus and Win98 not getting along. That could be your problem. Somebody back me up here. Does anyone else remember the posts about Norton crashing Windows 98?

I run Norton AntiVirus 5.0 and Win98
and have had no problems,
infact if I didn't have NAV running I would have died many times over........ http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Okay guys, I searched and searched the archives, and found absolutely nothing related to my last post about NAV conflicting with Win98. I must be going crazy or something. I'm really sorry for the misleading info.

Norton Utilities, especially their CrashGuard, can be rather hellish...

I am trying to reinstall IE, but I cannot. Is there any way to do this?

MrEd I wonder if it was the CrashGuard that you remember - I seem to remember that being brought up. I would like to add my name to socalgal and Mntsnow comments.

hi
I noticed you have outlook 2000 and access 2000 loaded,
just a thought, I was running office 2000 a little will back on an assement system also loaded Norton anti virus 5 gold
Norton utilities 3 (crashgaurd was running though iI don;t know why I bothered as it was to sensative and always shutting programs down)
however when ever I was on the internet with this system it was Totally unstable untill we uninstalled Office 2000 pro and unistalled IE 5 then reistalled IE 5 over the net from MS used old version of IE 3 or 4 I think) installed Office 97 Pro SR2 and the system became stable but I am now convinced problem was to do with either outlook 2000 or Access 2000 as test system has been up and running ever since without trouble, except if we try to do something stupid with it

I would love to uninstall IE5 and reinstall it, the problem is I have WIN 98 SE, and IE is the browser that came with it. I cannot find a way to uninstall the **** thing. Not the IE5 utility from the website, or the Add/Remove programs window or the Add/Remove Windows Components window. (If you see Bill Gates, shoot him once for me!)

You're right GentleGiant.
I knew it had something to do with Norton.
I guess I shoud do more research before opening my mouth. I keep finding myself saying things like: "I think", and "I've heard", and not enough "I'm certain".

I've read about problems running the ms "2000" progs. These were posts on ZDTV boards, but they all seemed to have one thing in common - the 2000 programs.

I don't know if this'll help you, but you could try to uninstall through your device manager, some of your hardware, then reboot and let win re-install it for you.

I have also "been told" (ha!) that the bios knows better how to allocate irq's than win "thinks" it does. If worse comes to worst, you could try letting the bios do the allocating.

Just my .02 worth, but whatever you do, I hope it works for you...

Good Luck In All,

Mike P.

Hi getting IE5 is messy but it can be done we did it by first transfering IE files to a new folder, then instal windows 98 back over the top, we got rid 2000 based programs first, outlook 2000 can be got rid of from office 2000 CD load program, once all was sweet we deleted the IE that we put in a new folder. /forum/wink.gif

P.S. instead of shooting Bill Gates why not try Linux 6.0 if you partition your drive there's a contact over in the States (Rebecca Sands who supplies Red Hat with manual onboard plus a lot of utilities for under $15 USD if you want email for her , the email me and I will dig it out for you)

DO NOT INSTALL CRASHGUARD

And keep all symantec products from running in the back ground. If you need to use a utility run it on it's own{even Anti Virous}.If you need to use a monitor shut it down when your done with it.
