I dunno if I'm getting old and out of touch or if there really just isn't anything new and exciting out there any more. I am having a really hard time finding anything worth getting excited about in the way of PC Games. I'm kinda looking forward to BF 2 and I might go pick up Star Wars KOTOR II. But still. . .these are just sequels to games. . .more of the same old stuff. Is there anything really new and innovative out there? I don't play sports or driving games. I like some MMORPG's but I have sworn them off for a while because they are too much of a collosal waste of time and money. I've played Ultima, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, and Star Wars Galaxies so as much as I'd really like to play WoW, I'm afraid even that will be more of the same. I'm looking for something that will make me feel like I did when I first started to play BF 1942. . .where it doesn't cost $15 per month to play but I can still sit glued to the computer for hours at a time. I want something I can be addicted to for a few hours but then when I turn it off, I'm done until next time. . .not an MMORPG if you know what I mean. Halflife 2 was great but not that innovative. Played it a couple times through and had lots of fun but then didn't see any point in playing any more. Of all the games I own now, the battlefield games are the only ones that really still hold my interest for very long because they have such depth and so many aspects of play. It just seems like everything coming out lately has a 2 or 3 or 4 after the title name. Where's the innovation?

I'm having similar problems looking for a new game myself. I've just bought Sid Miers Pirates - not played it yet, but it looks a bit different and has some good reviews. Otherwise the big one for me is going to be Elder Srolls IV: Oblivion in Q4 05... I guess this is a sequel too, but if it's a good game then that doen't bother me.

I still waste hours each week on Total Anihilation and the expansions.
Its just a pity that CaveDog are no more coz TA was and still is the absolute best RTS game ever!

As for Elder Scrolls IV and Warcraft III, again I reiterate. . .seems like everything on the shelves now has a 2 or 3 or 4 after the title. Where's the innovation? We need some new ground breaking genres out there. Nothing against Warcraft, I have all the Warcraft games (except WoW) and they are good but getting tired. I want a new drug!

I don't get the hype with WC III. I've played it and frozen throne and it is just a rehashed and prettied up version of WC2.

In fact blizzard is one of the least innovative companies that I can think of. They were innovative in 1998. Now look at their roster.
3 Diablo Games
4 Warcraft Games
3 Starcraft Games

I agree with you totally about their being a lack of anything exciting out. In fact over the last 4 years nothing has really hit me as a wow game. I think the last game to do so was Mafia a couple or more years back.

Well I gotta hand it to GTA III. They took the GTA games and turned them into something totally new with that one. But then they beat it to death with Vice City and San Andreas.

hey man....I know how you feel. There was so much hype about Doom 3 and HL2...now there past...there just seems to be nuthing to get teeth into. I dont like playing games through more than once and dont like these RPG type things....NFS Underground 2 is pretty good at the moment though. Thanks god for that:D

I agree with you on that one. I remember playing one of the first gta games years ago and hating it, I thought the controls were horrible. When GTAIII came out it was a big whoa to me. However I thought VC lost it's edge and was a letdown because I already knew what to expect. I havent played the latest one, san andreas but expect much the same.

I never got any WOW effect from any games except RTS or NFS Underground 1

i only like RTS games, and a few racing ones

NFS Underground 1 is my favorite

the firs time i saw it i was "HOLY ****! THIS IS AWESOME!" and started jumping of joy :D

NFS Underground 2 is a piece of **** in my opinion, it's not half as good as NFSU1

it used the old junk **** of the MS MidTown Madness 2 game play style and 3d engine  ... what a waste.

WARCRAFT 3 is definitely best game of all times

it has both the good stuff of STARCRAFT and WARCRAFT 2 and Diablo 2, all combined in 1 single package with State of the art 3D engine (as far as RTS games goes) and THERE ARE NO LIMITS as to what you can do with the games.

I love making new maps and stuff, and all those custom games, etc..

it's simply amazing.

You can even make a movie out of it if you wanted to spend the time.

you can customze the game down to such level, that if it was not illegal to resell it with their engine, you can Pratically say it's a new game :r

is way too good beyond any one's comprehention if you only try the standard out of the box game

you'll get know the full shine of WC3

God are we spoiled.....

The way gamers seem to be ,I don't know if the gqme developers can keep up with everyones demands,,,but I think they try real hard to give us some good stuff...

The thing is, it takes TIME to make a game and it seems always gamers are impatient to a fault...

There are about three games I am looking forward to..when they come out.

Doom 3 : Reserection of Evil
Splinter Cell 3
F.E.A.R.

These are all first person shooters...and as far as the other..I have grown to really love RTS strategy games....

WC 3 and Frozen Throne ( playing it now ) may not be everyones cup of tea..but you cannot argue it is a beautiful game all around....unique in its own right.

Any of the RTS 3D highly detailed strategy games I like ..some more than others....but they have to have a good storyline..and cinematics also....

I can see your ponit as to the reality that sometimes there is a lapse in between games like HL 2 and D 3 or whatever turns your crank....but really, it is not like they can just crank them out at will.

To get the kind of games we expect and love takes a while to tweak and get just so...,enough tomake us happy for the moment ( ??????)

I played HL2 over twice all the way through on two differnt modes and the D3 twice or maybe three times all the way through.....and will do so again after a long layoff i suppose.

Replaying some of your old favorites is what alot of us do by nature...and replayability counts for alot nowadays.

I am real happy with my assortment of games, which are quite a few...and most of the very best..also,but even I look over the listings and new things out and sometimes nothing makes me jump up and shout.... Thats life!

between now and July...there will be some real good games coming out and at least four more by the end of April...

There are enough choices..I think ou may have to just look a little harder and maybe try something new.... :( ;)

I got Battle For Middle Earth, and that not a sequel its a spinoff. So if thats any better and if you like those games. I for one have been playing the game no stop for about 10 days. So I think its pretty good. Also if you have Xbox get Fable, its so short but you can be good or bad. Also you can buy houses, have wifes, steal for stores, and once you get good enough at stealing you can get in the stores without the alarm going off.

I don't think we are spoiled at all. Game companies put out the same number of games like they did 10 years ago. I don't think it is too much to ask the game companies to come up with some unique ideas for a change and stop resorting to safe content. Think outside the box developers!

All the games like Warcraft have the same lame storyline (eg. some demon or evil person is taking over the world blah blah.)

Now take the 3 games you listed. Sure they will probably be good games, no dispute but seriously how original are they and how safe? Spliter cell uses its existing fan base to sell its sequels, and doom is capitalizing on doom3 by selling a safe sequel knowing that those who liked doom3 will buy it. Sequels to popular titles and addon packs are brainless safe games because the companies often know they will make money on them regardless of how original they are.

This isn't to say there isn't a place for non-unique games. Look at sports games, they are the same roughly every year. Most RTS games are identical with a few tweaks on the same gaming premise. They are fun to play repetitively but aren't, wow i've never seen this before, type of games.

I don't mind long development times, hell they are expected, I know how the industry is. Just please don't tell us 2 years in advance that it will be coming out on a certain date if you can't promise. Just keep it quiet and wait to tell the world when you are ready. I am willing to wait for something I have never seen before.

I'm sure they would love to keep things under wraps..but in our world ..there is this endless ongoing pressure for whats up now and can't wait attitude..so like a good news story, it is nearly impossible to do so.

I also agree about individuality and the fact that games are pretty much similar in content and style and beings its a competitive business like every thing else..it just takes guts and money...along with game innovators ( in house) to come up with new ideas....

One of the reasons I believe..is that many want and demand something similar because they liked the original so much..and gamers input ideas should be listened to as THEY buy the products.

What would you like to see??;)

Yes gamers definitely want sequels and there is a place for them. Take starcraft for example, people all over the net want another one, yet the second will never have the mass originality of the first because if it does it will not be similar enough to the original to meet the gamers demands.

As for what I want, that is the thing, something I've never seen before. For example before Diablo first came out, I never wished for a hack and slash game where you fight levels in hell and fight the devil but when it came out I was amazed. Or before before mafia came out I never though of a game where you could drive around a fully functional city that progresses through time and your life as a gangster, but when it came out I was amazed again.
Another example is Max Payne, I never thought before that of a true to life type game where you could alter time to almost stop it while you are in full speed, truly amazed me when I first saw it. This is true with most of the pioneers of different genres, people never though of the games before that point, or else they wouldn't be pioneers.

One thing I would like to see is a game that is truely open ended but set in a modern type setting rather than an open ended fantasy setting like a Morrowind. Something where you can choose what you do and what you choose alters paths within the game itself, leading to limitless replay value. There would be a main storyline which again is altered and has many paths but you can choose to do this at your choosing or if at all due to the many oter paths. I'd like something a little more real rather than a demon taking over the world, etc.

A multiplayer variation of this game is a real life, Large real time city where all the buildings are accessible and there are streets, common people, but more like 100x the size of a gta city(which is rather small when you think about it). People can own possessions like cars and homes, make money, all with a very realistic and gritty urban setting. It would be open ended in that you could form gangs, be a crime boss, have rivals, be a good guy cop, have a million dollar home or wander around in your car, anything. It is pretty much endless what could be done with it and expensions could keep adding things like new stores (which you can also open yourself), cars, additions to the city, hell even other cities. Or you could even have different servers have different cities and you can travels between cities.

Why would a game maker such as Illusion Works choose not to make a sequel to the game Mafia is beyond me.

This is one of the best games ever put out. Just very disappointing.

Its like making a movie like LOTR and saying goodbye after the first episode.

Also, I guess we are going to be stuck with this good versus evil thing till the end of time.

I am playing KOTOR right now...actually taking my good sweet time with it...and its a bit confusing to me..as I am so used to being led on a mission of some sort in a set design ..that the openess and many side missions..as well as the storyline is somewhat confusing to me.... In all reality, I am just going by intuition mostly and trying to follow what the storyline is..but I have never really studied the SW whole genieology and background enough..I suppose.
Regardless of how i do or how much I like ort dislike it, I can see past things and the reasons why it got Best of games Award for 2003. So much in the interface...almost too much in my opinion.

You must have really liked that game..if you played it.

In the strategy category..the new Empire Earth 2 game coming out looks by the demo and all it has to be a decent buy.
Thing is ...it uses some changes to the norm in how it works ..and the ingame menus...but really again just the same rehashing of how you do things...

You sound likke you enjoy and like creative things..esp. new ideas...and there is nothing wrong with that.
In my heart I know game makers are grabbling with their ideas and input very hard along thee lines....its just very hard to get out of the mainstream and take the plunge.

I know you said you're bored of mmo's, but city of heroes seems pretty original and fun. Probably will still suck away all your time like they all do, and you'll probably hate it after a few months, like all the rest. But I think if you can convince yourself to only play it in measured amounts for a short time period it'll be fun an exciting until you hit max lvl or something like that.
I'd also suggest Baldur's Gate and BGII if you haven't played them yet. Old games, so i'm sure you have, but if you haven't plenty of add-ons have been released, which make the games so much more enjoyable the second time around.

And since you like a wwII game, Day of Defeat is my favorite. Bad graphics, but it's fun and challenging.

Other than that, maybe try far cry if you haven't. The gameplay may be a little vanilla, but the multiplayer's pretty original, and it has a different setting than any other fps i've played.

Rabbitrunner51

City of Heros is a different game ...but also it has gotten real good reviews by the so called experts.

I am so caught up like alot of us in the shooters and simialar type games and style that it is hard to shell out $ for something totally new of different... We each have our own likes and our personalities might dictate what our next actions will take.

Shoot... I had more fun and enjoyed playing American McGees Alice, then any new game i got or have played recently.

Remember some time ago I played Freedom Fighters..which is alot like City of heros if not the seguel to it..and it was alot differnt than anything I played previously.personally, do not enjoy these type games as they seem too kiddy like to me...

Trying to appease the masses must be a challenge for sure, and there ARE some game companiesd trying there best to do this by bring something new to the table...and it is risky..so love or hate..you have to applaud those who try.

I reinstalled and played Baldur's Gate II through again in December when I was a bit bored of other games. It brought back memories of the days when I would be up till 3am, forgetting everything around me, and I would be so immersed in the game that it almost seemed as though the characters came to life and had personalities. I can recall very few games where I was engrossed as much as this game, perhaps only as much would be fallout 2. It isn't the same type of immersion you get with a strategy game where you play all night to beat an enemy, it is playing all night to find something you haven't seen, go to into the unknown. Brilliant in my opinion.

Rr51, never played KOTOR, I just haven't gotten into online multiplayer games much other than some shooters. It sounds like Morrowind when I first started, it was so open ended for like a few days I had no clue what I was doing. After a week or so though I was hooked and must have played that for 2 months straight. Some people just hate the fact that it is too open ended though. Can't please everyone :)

I guess I am creative by nature. I am a designer, artist, and former 3D modeler in college days. I am not a game designer however, I just know what I like when I see it.

yeah.. to date this game KOTOR is the wierdest game I have played... It is quite good for all intent and purposes...just extremely confusing as rather than make things very user friendly and simple..you have to perform so many actions....stop and start and change and update the characters ..ect.ect..ect.....

Its really quite a piece of work in the positive sense... I have never played anything like it to date..and I have everything
almost...

I bet this gamew will take me a year to finish..and by then I will really get the hang of it... requires alot of patience and concentration...

A friend is letting me play Morrowind ...and it is quite differnt inhow the game presents itself and goes about the actions and menu interface. Looks very nice..considering when it came out..and has that special ability to mystify you somewhat as to what is going to happen next... Kind of old school.;)

ohhhh... that's a good memory

I almost forgot FallOut the entire series

that was definitely one of my favorite games outside my typical daily dose.

I'm not a Fan of RPG style games

but FallOut really got me into it, with it's some what different way of playing compared to the same old same old RPG.

and well as some says FallOut isn't really a RPG either cuz it was rather too simple for those that simply like to wander around the map aimlessly like that Morrowin boring game

what i consider "RPG" and are in my favorite list is Diablo series and FallOut series

as we speak i just replayed the whole Diablo 2 back to back last night, on all 3 levels finishing everything.

just for the fun of it :D

I know 1 night is crazy. I think it took me like 7 days when i first played it to beat it on all the levels. Became kinda a chore after the first level. I hate those things in the jungle level that spit the darts at you and jump on the other guys backs. Madness I tell you!

When I think of how much of my life I wasted played Diablo 1 online I just shake my head. I swore I'd never do that again and I haven't since. Now I just beat a game once or twice, retire it to the collection, move on, and maybe play it again a few years later.

it's easy after you finish it the first time.

The first time it took me a FEW WEEKS, cuz it was you know first time, and you are a noob, and no clue what is good, what is not, etc

but once you know, then you know exactely what to look for, what to make, etc, etc... then it becomes too easy.

I just like to play the game and go in a killing spree, actually i just do a walk in the Park, i let my Minions take care of the stuff for me, I only go after the big bosses :D

I still keep my account alive in Battle.net.

my favorite characters are Amazon, Druid, and Necro

you hardy have to do anything using the last 2 :p

but after a few hours they get real boring, once you finish building the house, and everything you want to have inside. :p

but helll it's true, and it's cheaper, faster and easier to use than AutoCAD and alikes softwares :D

of course for the actual home work you'll still need the real thing done in AutoCAD :p

ironically about 60% of all Engineering class are Girls / Womens

It'd be sweet if you could import your real architectural models into The Sims. The homes would be spectacular rather than a series of "lego" bricks forming the resemblance of a structure. Then to take it further you can import your sim house and life into Sim City and zoom in to micromanage it. I think it'd be sweet to occupy a highrise condo within Sim City rather than just follow a person you import who really isn't controlled. I get bored with those games quite easily, at first they are fun but become mundane really fast and with no storyline or anything to follow it becomes pretty much of the same thing. Games like Sim City need more micromanagement such as armies to control, a government to create, real neighbors to see and interact with, almost like a slight cross with a Civilization game.

Of course we don't hate you :) But I'll say this. . The SIMS epitomizes the problem that I'm talking about! It started with the Sims, then Livin Large, the House Party, then Hot Date, then like. . .Vacation was it? Then the one where they could have pets, and I probably missed a few in between I'm sure because I got sick of the sims after House Party. Talk about BEATING A TITLE TO DEATH!!! And the game didn't evolve at all really. . .they just kept adding more and more things the Sims could do but never really made the game any better or different. Collosal waste of time and BORING BORING BORING! It was nifty in the beginning but got tired real fast, and they didn't do anything to keep me interested. Then they just took the same game and made it "online" so every SIM was a "real person." Man, talk about a non-innovative title. I think SIMS takes the cake!

I have a Associates degree in Design and Engineeering...and when I was young I always wanted to be an Architech.

It turns out that the mechanical side was the most practical....and had much more to offer in the way of math and many other areas.

After working in the field of pre-engineering for some time...it still did not defer my dreams of getting into that field.

There is alot more to archetecture than meets the eye..and bleieve me it requires actually just as much if not more smarts to get good at it and get recognition.

To this day..one of the msot amzing things in our world of ours is Archetecture... Like a good painting ,but much more is involved in the ways of visual and practical purposes.

The three top things in this world that makes life worth living for me is Kids,Art and I guess you can include Archetecture in that category also.

There is no question though ,that Engineering as a whole has contributed the most to our society.;)

OK ..I just ordered my two games for this month..and they porbably won't be on anybodies list as they are a bit older....( waiting for some other titles a bit later on).

Since I have a friend nest door who is a nut about C & C ( he has ithe original for Gamecube ) ,and plays Generals it on my computer ( he went out and bought it )....I ordered the Zero Hour expansion pack... ( $9.99 ),which is not bad for a great game and the expansion got real good reviews..so.

The other game I ordered was "Chronicles of Riddick" as I had that on my short list and after a couple of rave reviews from a couple of you guys here and elsewhere..this would be a safe bet..I think..and got it for just under $18.00 plus shipping ( $21.99 )

I just have so many games rihgt now and can afford to wait and be selective....

By the first part of April..the other two I want will be out ...SC 4 and the Doom expansion game "Reserrection of Evil"

Cannot afford to spend $100.00 for two games or a little less...so I will have to wait on at least one of those.;)

...found Far Cry at wallyworld yesterday... $20. I realised that it was one of those game that I was going to get, but got forgotten the first time around.. Picked it up and I'm good for at least the next week or so.
The gaming Jones is, temporarily, under control.:D
Enjoy!

well once your done with single player, multiplayer will keep you busy for a couple more weeks after that at the very least.

Happy Joe... That will be the best $20.00 you ever spent.

A week you say? I believe it will take you over two weeks if not longer to finish the game.. It is long and very very enjoyable and even scare the socks off of you in quite a few places.... The AI is the best they ever made as far as I am concerned...and it has lots of replay value.

I am playing Thief 3 Deadly Shadows now as another inbetween game to play ..along with a few others..and I like it so far. Graphics and all are darn good.... and I am finding it is not too awful hard to play. Am quite partial to stealth games. Just more relaxing to me to play amist all the action and hurried paced games out.
