May you should clarify how did you reached to the above conclusion, and give a short description of your Internet connection.
Cable/DSL Router's ports can not be open, unless you open it.

My connection specs as follows:
ADSL Firewal Router DG834
I have run a retina Security scan on the routers IP address which revealed the open port.
I have confirmed the port is open with GRC.com selective port scanner.

OK.
Try to log to the Router's ports menu. Usually referred to as Virtual Server, and close the port.
If none of your computer application is using the port nothing would happen. If something needs the port it will stop working.
However you would get much better control and the capacity to find what is going on if you would install a Software firewall in addition to the Router's NAT Firewall.

Sorry should have been more detailed with the discription. I am running Zone Alarm Pro on all the machines behind the router firewal. There does not appear to be anything going on that shouldn't be.
I run Kasperski Pro virus protection, Spybot Search and destroy & Adaware Pro on a daily basis and all are clear.
The nearest an AOL disc has gotten to any of my computers is 3 feet away in the guise of a makeshift coffee mat, so I am very interested why an AOL port would be open on the router.

Do not get fixated on the three letters AOL it does not mean any thing. Internet Junk includes legit names and codes to try to hide the real Dirt, who ever creates it can put in his code what ever he wants. You might have a piece of “Junk” that was cleaned by your cleaning program and what you see is just traces.
Close the port in the Router check it close in the software firewall, and tyr again GRC.

Had a think about what you said about it being remaining junk from a removed program.
I have powered down all machines and disconnected them from the router.
I reset the router and performed the security scan from a remote location totally independent of my network.
Sure enough I got the same results.
I have manually blocked the port now within the routers config but I still don't know why it was ever open in the first place.
Thanks for your help anyway:t
