I was just going to start a thread about this, just a few hours late :)

Here's some more information:

http://www.physics2005.org/events/einsteinathome/index.html

What is Einstein@Home?

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from extremely dense, rapidly rotating stars. Such sources are believed to be either quark stars or neutron stars, and a subclass of these are already observed by conventional means as pulsars or X-ray emitting celestial objects. Scientists believe that some of these compact stars may not be perfectly spherical, and if so, they should emit characteristic gravitational waves, which LIGO and GEO 600 may begin to detect in coming months.

How can you help?

Einstein@Home will rely on private owners of PCs, like you, to donate computer time to the analysis of LIGO data. All you'll have to do is install a small, screen saver program to your computer. The screen saver will automatically download a tiny portion of the enormous data set that LIGO will collect. When your computer is otherwise idle, it will analyze the data and send it back to the LIGO scientists. The screen saver only runs when you're not using the computer, or when you choose to manually turn the program on. Einstein@Home will not affect your computer's performance.

We are fortunate to have David Anderson, the pioneering developer of SETI@Home, helping us put the Einstein@Home project together. SETI@Home is a revolutionary distributed computing program that searches data from the Arecibo radio observatory for signs of extraterrestrial life. The total computing power donated to SETI@Home currently far exceeds the capabilities of any super computer yet built.

Einstein@Home - 2005-02-22 17:28:23 - Message from server: To participate in this project, you must use version 4.19 or higher of the BOINC core client. Your core client is version 4.13.

It doesn't update its self ? ............ Cruddy

:D

Boinc only updates the application that does the crunching. You have update the client manually.

I just installed BOINC for the first time since the initial fiasco to give this project a chance. So far everything seems to be going smoothly. I even installed SETI again just to see if things have improved.

j.m@talk
02-22-2005, 08:05 PM
I've had boinc running for a good few weeks without too much aggro ..... I found if I set it to contact home every 3 days it down loads enough wu's to get over their patchy server reliability ;)

:t

Johnny Fist
02-22-2005, 08:23 PM
I have mine at every two days. I hated BOINC when it first came out, but I'm going to give it a try. I attached SETI, Einstein, and Climateprediction and share resources between the three equally. If all goes well I'll try and figure out how I installed it on my Linux computer and set it up there again. Until then that computer is useing seticlassic.

you have to register, and then they will give you a URL and Account key to attach boinc to.

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/create_account_form.php

after you get your info go into boinc, settings, attach to project.
enter you info and you will be good to go.

ShadeZeRO

Ok, how long does that take, one is saying 'ready to report' for a while now...the others went pretty quick....

and my cpu temp is at 58*C!!!!

I really need a new cooler on it.
I've never seen my a64 hit 100% CPU usage

j.m@talk
02-26-2005, 10:42 AM
Its a work out for your CPU if theres anything wrong with your cooling this will find it .....

The Wu's usually take different ammounts of time to process.

It will upload when its good & ready.

58 Degs C what ya using as a cooler?
Time to go shopping & get somthing that works ;)

Read up on that puppy

Only £34.00 each here too

ShadeZeRO
02-26-2005, 10:52 AM
I just use the stock stuff, with cooling paste on it too.

Idle this thing runs anywhere 47-52*C Like any A64 does...thats normal for the 754 clawhammer series.

j.m@talk
02-26-2005, 10:53 AM
Real men don't use stock ;)

They Use Arctic Silver 5 too :t

Yeah, i might get that thermalright xp-120
http://www.frozencpu.com/cpu-tri-12.html

but there is one problem.
http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_support_faq_motherboard_xp120_k8.htm

ASUS K8V Deluxe:
*caps mechanically obstruct pipe slightly, cap tilting necessary.

Im not comfy having to bend caps as i might break them :(

Plus i gotta goto the store and buy a 120mm fan for it.

Reviews:

j.m@talk
02-26-2005, 12:21 PM
Yeah ya need a fan for it

Buy summink else then :p

You could allways modify the cooler to fit around the capacitor I modified one of my coolers wiv a hammer

It worked a treat :p

I have a Thermalright SLK800 ..... Dunno if it will cope with a AMD64 tho ..... Ya gonna have to read up (Beware there is a lot of carp about) Thermalright have a good name in cooling ..... They ain't cheap but they are good ......... Ohh If you see a edge drive fan anywhere avoid it ...... They are none too relyable & they are an odd size so ya can't replace them with a standard unit .... Free sage advice here :t

j.m@talk
02-26-2005, 12:22 PM
;)*caps mechanically obstruct pipe slightly, cap tilting necessary.
Yeah I'd give it some with the hammer :t

j.m@talk
02-26-2005, 12:26 PM
SLK948U maybe ........ Yes you have to buy a fan for it ......... Its not as if the other companies "Give" you a fan is it ? its just included in the price ;)

This way you can buy a really cheap carppy one to save money  & listen to it grinding away for the rest of your life :t

The HS it self is the hard part.

Hey, scav, i got my CPU at 40*c right now, idle...thats just stock cooling.

I moved it out of the little compartment in my desk so it can get ventillatin, and i put the AC on.

But when the AC's off, it hits 50*c idle as usual...

j.m@talk
02-27-2005, 07:57 PM
Mine moves between 42 & 46 at full tilt ......... Mind you its going full tilt 24/7 ........ It sounds like a bag of spanners when its cold ..... which is rare ..... Its been running for 2.5 years tho :t

ShadeZeRO
02-27-2005, 10:25 PM
yeah, mine is on 24/7 al lthe time too

Scavenger7
02-28-2005, 07:59 AM

:t

j.m@talk
02-28-2005, 10:45 AM
Do you find your fans groan like crazy till they warm up after a shutdown ........ Mine do :( They are all good qual ball bearing jobs too

I sanpped a fin off a Hdd cooler last time it was off  ............ So that hdd only has 1 fan runnin' Must fix it up ASAP.

No Poxy electrical storm shutdowns here, mind you we don't have external wiring as a rule here in the UK 95% is underground.

We do have the Big 33,000 Volters elevated ........ But they are so well bonded a lil lightning doesn't harm it :t

Scavenger7
02-28-2005, 03:04 PM
I also get fan noise. I have a stock pile of fans, so when it's cleaning time i can replace them when needed.

ShadeZeRO
03-19-2005, 11:58 AM
yeah, i finally got the HSF installed, and its great.

The vante tornado is loud, like a hair dryer on Full blast.

Tho, i OCed my A64 3400+ to 2.4ghz, and it stays nice and cool (38*c) with BOINC, AIM, Winamp, running.

ShadeZeRO
03-19-2005, 11:59 AM
attachment went dumb...
if i get it to 2.4ghz, will it read as a 3700+??
