I just lost out on an auction for a new HP 15" LCD for $200 (australian dollars. They still retail at $350).
Now $200 is pretty cheap for an LCD but the guy who beat my bid by only $2.50 aparently doesn't want it.
The seller has now contacted me offering to sell me the screen for my bid of $200 (which was actually just a 'fake' bid so I could show a client how ebay works, I never expected it would only go for $2.50 more :)
I noticed that the seller had 2 of these both ending at the same time, one was an auction and one was a buy it now item.

Is it more probable that:

The high bidder didn't want the thing
-or-
That the buy it now item didn't get sold and the seller still wants to get rid of it and now has a perfect way to do that and not pay the eBay listing fee and comission?
Should I trust the guy? He has 107 feedback points and a 99.1% positive rating.

Ebaying, like most else in life is an act of faith - 99.1% is a pretty good indicator.
Check up on the 'Buyers protection' available for the item.

Indication of what ? Shill bidding goes on all the time on e-bay. I know of buyers who sell alot of goods on ebay that have several other people at different IP addresses place bids to raise the price.
Some times the plan backfires and the shill wins the bidding leaving them the choice of relisting (check the sellers history and see how many times an identical item has been relisted, or check the shills history for the same) or calling the next highest bidder to see if you are still interested.

Either way you are not obligated to purchase the LCD since you were beat out by a "legitimate" bid.

pm me the link and let me see.

You can get an LCD monitor for A$329 new and that was the 1st place I looked on line.

I was looking for a 21inch crt for myself.
If I could get 1, 40% cheaper from e-bay I would go for it.

LCD's are known for dead pixels! you might want to check it out before paying up. If he wants rid of it, have him send it before payment.

I think I'll go ahead with it.
The only bugger is that in between the time I lost the auction and this guy contacting me, I bought a different screen :)
So now I'll have a couple of em', but at least I can sell whichever has the most dead pixels for a healthy profit.
The other one is a diamond (mitsubishi) for around the same price, just a tad more.

Me finks ya don't need it .......... That said let it go ........ Ya don't need the possible aggro :(

I get contacted like that after an item ends from time to time. I never go through with it. I also get contacted buy people on Ebay who have missed the auction or simply don't have the money but want to buy something from me later. I ALWAYS make a new listing and give them a Buy It Now option for the agreed upon price. That way there is no confusion and they know I won't take the money and run. Its worth the extra money Ebay and Paypal charge you for the security and piece of mind.

And charge well.
I do need both screens, I just didn't expect them to both come along within 2 hours of each other.
One for myself as a 2nd screen on my main rig, and another to wall mount in my workshop so I'm not using up 3 square feet of space for my current CRT screen there.
If he stiffs me, I'll just contact any bidders on the guy's future auctions and tell them not to trust him, that he won't send the items and stuff.
I also have his telephone number and address so I can send lots of crank calls and stuff.

I was thinking about getting myself a small 15" screen for that very same reason. I've got a 17" CRT on there now that just takes up way too much room.

zybch
02-20-2005, 05:23 PM
The best thing I did was to replace my 19" crt with a 17" lcd.
I bought a proper LCD arm for it though, as it still took up heaps of room with the stupid stand that Benq was using at the time.
I was amazed at how much brighter it was than the crt screen.

Perhaps the reason none of em want to tie the knott with you is because of your pickle (or rather lack of).
