It'll be amusing to watch that happen. before you know it there will be a patch to make AU think you have already gone SP2.

"Microsoft has begun reminding users who last year blocked the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) that a deadline is fast approaching. On April 12, all blocking mechanisms will expire and Windows XP and XP SP1 systems will automatically download and update to SP2.
"The intent of this alert is to provide you with a reminder about the upcoming deadline around the date on which Automatic Update (AU) and Windows Update (WU) will deliver Windows XP SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism," said Microsoft.

Prior to the release of Windows XP SP2, Microsoft offered up work-arounds and other tools companies could apply to keep the massive security update from installing on PCs with Automatic Update enabled. Although Microsoft repeatedly stressed that SP2 was "an essential security update," enterprises were leery of widespread adoption until they could thoroughly test it. Microsoft gave in, first setting a mid-December 2004, deadline, but then extending it to eight months from the August release of SP2 to Automatic Update. "

The eight months are up as of April 12, 2005.

"Beginning 12 April 2005 this temporarily blocking mechanism will expire and systems with Automatic Update enabled or interactively download SP2 via Windows Update will begin receiving SP2," Microsoft added.

April 12 is also that month's regularly-scheduled security bulletin and patch disclosure day.

Means simply don't run auto-update. Stay manual.

I have auto updates off here. SP2 works OK on my machine but crashed a couple others here, so, I 'm not allowing it to install. If M$ would fix whatever causes the trouble, then I'd not feel so bad, but haven't heard of any evidense that they have done so.

....so even the pirated versions will be forced to dl SP2???

Cuz the pirated is the same one as the 'big businesses' use right? Or is dat wrong...

anyhow.. i have all those update processes turned off thanks to that black viper site...

i got like 24 processes :), and dont want AU to make me lag at random times.

I view this a little differently. Big Businesses use Volume License Keys which eliminate the need for activation. It was the perfect type of key to pirate so the big business use legitimate copies while pirated versions use pirated corporate keys. Same type of key so yes big businesses use the same type of install key as pirate copies of windows.

My Dell OEM key on my Dell laptop does not require activation either so I have the same type of key windows pirates use but mine is legit.

Yeah, but YOUR OS is the same as the PIRATED OS, so both of them will be forced to update windows?

I thought M$ tried to block them from SP1 and they got it some way. And now their GIVING them SP2?

The issue is migration to SP2 and beyond.

It is all but mandatory as far as m$ is concerned.
If the security issue rocks yer boat Then M$'s approach is fine.

But SP2 is still a bumpy road.

l applaud M$ for there effort.

Just don't be surprised mid April when support work load goes up a notch or 2.
Book yer hols now. :p

I have my AU and all those processes off from Services.msc, is it still gonna put SP2 on my comp?

I can giv M$ Credit for trying to give everyone a level playing feild for software developers. Wanting everyone to make sure SP2 is a thought in the process and what not.

I am not too worried about SP2. We have auto update disabled via our domain policy. Going to windows update will not allow even a scan for missing updates. Only a message that the admins (me and 2 others here) have disabled updates.

I see you point about the software being the same OS. I have installed from an OEM CD using a coporate volume key with no ill effect. I think part of the difference is only in setup and activation. Could be wrong.

One thing for sure is my companies key may never be blacklisted because it is not given out to anyone except the IT guys with specific instructions not to give it out. We have one key for each office so when a key gets out or blacklisted the search will narrow to 3 or 4 people. Would hurt to lose my job that way.

I suppose, i see ur point on the keys thing. But like anything that uses a key or encoding of sorts it can be used to create another key, hense a generator.

Right now, im trying to get a Small biz Pack from M$, but dad wont let me right now, Comes with about 5 corp keys for all OS, and office suites

I ordered an SP2 cd from M$, and hopefully it'll be here soon.

I did the exact same thing. I am using 2 OS licenses and 4 office licenses. Someday I will use all the XP licenses.

I have one Key for Windows XP and one for Office (2 different keys) that I can use on 5 systems.

thats cool.

If i ever get to order it (cuz dad said he wants to do VPN at the hotels everywhere, and have a webcam server)

But im still skeptical on SP2, so AU is off and what not. I like my OS the way it is now. Dont need extras to mess anything up. As long as i got my trusty Firewall, av, and generic intrusion prevention, i dont really have much to worry about.
