When I use the mic I hear myself in the speakers. I cannot record with it. It is plugged into the card according to the diagram in the manual. Any ideas as to why it does not work. TIA

go to your control panel and double click the 'multimedia' icon. when the window opens click on the speaker icon thing underneath the word 'playback'. then look for the setting for 'microphone' and click the 'mute' button. i also did this for the 'line in' one - im not sure if that is for mic also. but this should stop the sound from coming out in the speakers

Randy, the card actually has two controls for the mic, with it actually being able to act like a karaoke machine. Double click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and you will possibly see mic...mute this mic...then go to the pull down in the upper left (options) and go to properties. From there you will see that there are properties for both playback and record. Select the options you desire (in this case mic) in the record box and your mic will be hot, with a mixer coming to the screen to adjust the mic setting for record. The mic should be hot in record, and turned off in playback, unless you choose to use the karaoke feature.
