Hi I just put in a new cd rom the other one was acting funny slow / slugish reading of data...hard drive light always on ..window freeze etc...added new drive same thing...I am using win98 on a pent 2 celeron 300a system..also getting runtime erors 216 at 00002f00? Ant help would be appreciated

Are you loading the drivers for it in both the config.sys & autoexec.bat files? If so, rem them out. You may want to do a safe mode boot, F8, go into device manager and delete any duplicate entries you find there. Be sure to delete both of them. Delete any hardware that shows up there that is no longer being used. Let windows redetect them.

Let us know what happens.

HI Thanks for the reply the cd-rom 40 speed came with drivers only for dos and win 3.1 the manual said win 95 would detect them...I am using win 98? After deleteing the cd rom in device manager ..windows dosent show it isnt detecting new plug and play hardware yet the cd rom shows up in device manager with no conflicts,,,I get a fatal error OE 0028c1528c8e in vxd and a runtime error 214 at times..my auto exec and config syst list no lines regarding a cd-rom etc. mscdex ...
this is the 3nd cd rom doing this cannot run games and such..........help

my harddrive is acting the same way kind crazy huh?! try enabling/disabling ultra-dma in cmos, or checking/unchecking dma box in windows located in control panel-system icon
you also may have an irq conflict
