I have just installed Win 98 SE and now when i start up my computer it freezes during the boot. I think i have narrowed it
down to a time out of some sort. it takes windows 1 min and 20 sec to load. this is absurd for the following.
pIII 450
soyo 6BA+III Motherboard
128 MB RAM corsair cas 2
viper 770 ultra
kenwood 52x truex cdrom
3com NIC card. i forgot the model number 390b...something like that. any suggestions would be a great help.

Do you have a modem in it? If so, pull it out.

Remove the NIC card and see if it boots up.

Does it boot into safe mode?

Was this a clean install or over 95, etc.?

You are not quite clear. Is the machine completely hanging now and never making it into Windows since you installed SE or is it just taking a long time to load?

If its just taking a long time to load, its probably because of the NIC. Windows takes a long time to check/identify/or whatever the NIC. I have seen this on several machines.

I don't remember where I saw it, but I remember reading that you can fix this by inserting an address for the card into NetWork Neighborhood. Try doing a search on windows slow loading and a NIC and I am sure you will run accross this info.
