I have a external modem blaster and all of a sudden it will say unable to make a connection when I try to sign on to the net. It won't dial or anything. It has worked fine for the past 6 months. I've gotten the latest driver and firmware and it still does this. I've deleted it and reinstalled it and it still does it. If I reboot it'll work fine but I'm tired of turning the comp on just to reboot once I'm in winblows98. I haven't installed or uninstalled anything since this has happened so I have no idea what it could be.

It sounds like something is tying up your port. I would have thought that this might be due to some faxing software or something along those lines, but you say you haven't installed anything new.

You could try creating a new com port and assigning the modem to that new port, say com4.

If it is still not getting access to the port then it is probably some piece of software that is utilising the modem.

Well said Raider! I believe you are correct;

Now I realize that we are talking about an external modem, but I had a very similar problem with an internal PnP modem on COM3 (serial mouse on COM1).

I guess my modem did not like sharing an IRQ with the mouse, anyway, it was just driving me nuts, because every so ofter I would get the "Port busy, perhaps it is in use by..." and I too would have to reboot in order to get the modem working. To make matters worse, Windows would not let me change the settings - fortunately the modem could be jumpered as non-PnP, so I disabled the onboard COM2 and used those settings for my internal modem.

Hope this helps

Well I can't make another com port. It uses a serial port. It's on 2 and the mouse is on 1. There's no conflicts either.

Nevermind I got it fixed.....
