Condom and Viagra sales are soaring in Beijing as the city begins celebrating the Year of the Rooster.
Psychologists say residents are escaping the stress of life and letting their hair down to celebrate the week-long holiday.
Some stores said condom sales had doubled on the first day of the Lunar New Year, the country's official Xinhua news agency reported.
Another store said sales of the impotence drug Viagra had been "dramatic".
Xu Yan, a psychology professor at Beijing Normal University, said the phenomenon showed people were under massive psychological pressure from stressful city life.
"Their physical needs have been long neglected due to overwork and lack of sleep," she said.
She added the week-long holiday offered a good opportunity for "the awakening of their physical needs".
Experts say China is undergoing a sexual revolution as the country opens up to Western influences and throws off its conservative shackles.
