long filenames in dos

I know this is a stupid question but is there any way to use long filenames in DOS. I would like to use a cd-r to back up my hd. basic installations and be able to copy the files directly back to c:\in the event of a crash. To do so though requires that you be able to copy long filenames from DOS. Any comments or suggestions welcome
