man this is troublesome. well first of all I can't access my bios and my new 13.5 uata66 7200rpm is not recognized on my soyo 6ba+111 mobo. I know it only supports uata33 but many have said that I can us an uata66 HD on this board. I do use an 40 pin 80 wire cable and tried it on my other pc and still it is not recognized. any tips or suggestions

what should be the minimum amount of peripherals that I can attach and still access the bios. Should a video card, cpu and ram be all that I need to access bios or do I actually need a disk drive attached. I still don't know why my other pc won't recognize the new HD. I use the 40 pin 80 wire cable, is there something else that I need?

The minimum ammount of components to be able to access BIOS would be: CPU, RAM and a vid card.

But what is keeping you from accessing BIOS? is the mobo posting? Do you get a logo screen? Does it tell you what key to press? Or does the system not respond to keystrokes?

Some more info would help us diagnose the problem.

no logo coming up, just a blank screen the LED on my monitor lights up then dims down as if it were on standby. another big problem would be the fact that my new ata66 HD is not recongnized on my new mobo or my old mobo. thx for your help

1. make sure the processor is seating down tight enough, if your using a slotket, do the same, use some good retention clips too.

2. make sure you have your hard drive in master mode, not slave.

3. try a different slot for your ram.

re Chad174 post, when you have checked what he say's if still no post from mobo, try disconecting HD from mobo then fire up board, if it comes up try another drive.
I had an old board in the other day where owner had tried to install larger drive and until we disconected it mobo would refuse point blank to even cause a beep from speeker.

Guess - if it's a Seagate drive it will downstep to 33 specs - make certain it is set
to SLAVE if you've 'nother HD set to master.

If no other Hard Drive -set New Drive to Master-

Preparing Bios. Set boot up to Drive A -
Have some operating system disk like Win95
Start Disk - or any floppy with system files ready for boot. If there is Advanced Power Management in Bios - disable it.
Set the Hard Drive specs as advised by Seagate - if not known set to auto. Set PIO
to auto if available.
Save and exit.

Turn off power - disconnect EVERYTHING from the computer including Video cable printer mouse etc.
Use static wrist band or place a hand on the metal frame of the puter while working on it with the other hand.

Install HD attach power cord first then data cable MAKE certain pin 1 on the connector and
pin 1 on the cable align.

Don't know bout the 80 wire cable that is where your problem may be - check with Seagate - www.seagate.com.

Wait for 10 minutes before reconnecting stuff OR remove and reseat memory chips. But give the machine a couple of minutes yet before reconnecting stuff.

Place system disk in Drive A - Start the computer - it may complain about Dive 0 or C or something being a nonsystem disk but it will boot.

Generally you can wake up the monitor with factory persets - sometimes press together two switches on front panel -

You can trick most bioses into caughing by booting without the keyboard - unplug it and
bootup /forum/smile.gif

Hope that helps
