My parents bought quite a fancy digital camcorder, but the software that came with it is absolutely rubbish.

My digital camera connects via USB and I can just copy and paste the pictures/videos, but I can't seem to do that with my parent's camera.

The software that comes with it forces you to 'capture' the video, even though its digital. Whats more, the captured video ends up in 320x240 and really poor quality.

Any ideas? I was connecting the camera up via firewire. Do I need to buy a USB cable to copy the files properly? Or do I just need to find some decent video capture software?

Why do I need to 'capture' the video if its already digital!

Firewire is the only way to capture DV camcorder video. Firewire is designed to support streaming video, while USB was designed to support file access. There is a large difference on thruput requirements. You didn't mention the make and model of your parents camera, but some allow USB connections. My camera also support USB, but after trying to download the video via USB, I found 1,000's of lost frames. The firewire connection has never lost a frame. The word Capture means to stream the video from the camcorder to your PC. If you don't like the software that came with your parents DV camcorder, you can try this little guy.
Its free and works like a charm. Download it from here:

windv.mourek.cz

Its called windv, a great little program.

Then you can use what every you want to edit and burn the videos.
