how to use the signature

Looking through the profile settings, I created a signature but it isn't working or I don't know how to use it...
Also what is this "UBB Code" thing?

As an example, the above link that I just created is type like this, except with no spaces between the l and the bracket:

[url ]www.sysopt.com/forum/ubbcode.html[/url ]

The signature feature is not active.
