This is a new build, and I'm new to building. Win 98(just installed today) only thinks I have a 472 meg hard disk. The bios seems to think it is the right size. I'm also running Norton on the machine and it knows I have a 4 gigger. Any ideas on how to fix this? Why it happened? I've surfed all over the $#^#%% web and it looks like a wall I can't get over by myself. Thanks for any suggestions or comments which might aid in my understanding.

With you saying this is a new build I would have to say something got messed up while you were setting up the partitions. The only way to "enlarge" the partition without having to "reinstall" your software is to use a program called Partition Magic made by Powerquest.

If you did a low level format this can happen if you tell it to use the LBA mode. Don't ever do that!

If the above doesn't help, then it sounds like you may have a BIOS problem. It's acting like the BIOS only sees like the 512 limit. If you can, try a different hard drive. Where did you get the boot disk you used to set up the partitions with? Did it come with it?

Find the program fdisk on the boot disk or on the win 98 cd in win98 dir
run fdisk ccheck to the partitions

How did you go with the problem? I've just encountered the same problem and it's not impressing me. BIOS recognises it as being 4.3Gb but Windows only sees it as 298Mb and I can't do much with that!!
Tried formatting it but it only comes back up as 298Mb.
Thanks

Hey guys FORMATING will not get you any more space.....You need to do FDISK and delete the existing partitions and then make the correct size partitions and THEN format it...
Good Luck
