I have terrible phone lines near my house. Before I moved, I was connecting at 50,000 bps. Now in my house I cant get above 26.4. I came across these line noise filters that are supposed to remove radio interference etc. It was 20 bucks in radio shack so I picked it up. Anyone with bad lines have any positive experience with line noise filters? I have seen more expensive ones but dont want to waste the money if they are not going to work. I was going to bond my modems to double the speed but Bell Atlantic wants $200 to install 2nd phone line.

You tell Bell Atlantic their full of S***. A second phone line is already installed in your house. The phone only uses 2 wires and the phone cabling has 4 wires in it. Their just too lazy to connect the other wires to the pole.

ask the your local "CO" if they have a "SLICK" on the lines, it's known as a "subscriber loop carrier", SLC-96, or SLC series 5. if they do then v.42 won't work and you will only connect at v.34. local CO's only guarantee 29200bps on PSTN lines. you can ask then to run a loop back test to check for noise. also how far you are from their switch also has a lot to do with the type of connection you get. but check to make sure the line for your modem is homerun to the "Dmark" thats where your line comes into your house..

good luck

Bellatlantic told me it would cost
$95 for the tech to come to my house
$42 to connect the line at the poll
$44 to do the inside wiring

Plus its $9.95 for every 15 minutes he has to work after it is hooked up. I politely thanked the operator and said no f-ng way. They say these prices were just put into effect 8-1-99. Thats why Im curious about these line noise filters. I did have BA come out once and they confirmed I had bad lines and even got a vm saying the issue was resolved. I dont think so. Oh well. If any one has any experience with these filters let me know. Thanks

Im using the line filter now but I am still at 26.4. I dont hear the line static when I dial up now. I will download something to see if there is any change

OK....There are many factors other than noise that enter into trying to getting 56k class connections. Souns like you have either too many D/A and A/D conversions on your line or a pair-gain phone system. I don't know the specifics on why A/D conversions dont allow 56k connections but w/ the pair-gain, the phone CO takes multitple lines samples each set from every line then converts and compresses the signals down into less lines. This saves the phone CO. lots of money.
