Windows says 'installed OK'. All settings same as in WIN95 where it worked fine. When in 'Modems-Diagnose-more info' Leds on modem flash but get 'not responding message'.Had new Motherboard fitted at same time as upgrade. should I start looking at 'setup' for errors?

Some modems are not compatible with Win952.1+ or windows 98 for instance, the USR video modem will not work on anything later than Win 95 B because of some trouble with virtual device drivers. Hope this is not your problem.

You really should give more details - what modem - what motherboard? I gather from your post that it is an external modem probably on COM2.
Double check all physical connections first. Then check your COM port settings in BIOS.
Uninstall the modem software, if any; remove the modem from the device manager (you may even want to remove the COM port) and reboot, allow Win98 to reinstall the modem - supply any drivers disk that Win98 asks for.
If the modem is not auto detected then run the new hardware detection wizard and it will likely find a COM port, install port and then attempt to reinstall the modem from Control Panel/modems/add.
Good luck,

Thank you for replies.
My modem was an unbranded one!! Only Name '560DTV' but with SuperVoice2.2 software But installed OK before. My motherboard is a SEGO-Product & has an Award BIOSv4.51PG which I plough my way thru. There is a field named 'Modem use IRQ....' in "Power manag.setup" which was originally set to N/A I have tried setting to 3 the same as the COM2 address I gave to 'On board serial port 2' in "Intergrated Peripherals" .
My CPU is only 90Mhz is this significant?

that power management feature is for your computer to power up to answer the phone like an answering machine.

I just spent 3 days going thru the same thing.
I got my answer at AnandTech, thanks to KR.
This is assuming that modem will be on Com 1.
Disable Com 1 in the BIOS.
Reserve IRQ 4 for ISA in BIOS if you can.
Go to Control Panel/Add New Hardware and choose- will pick hardware from list. Highlight Ports (Com & LPT's).Click on next button.Click on next button again. A window will come saying- Win can install your hardeware using the following settings- I/O 3E8-3FF and IRQ 4. These are the settings for COM 1. Click next button and you will be done.
Install modem using Com 1 / IRQ 4 and you will be in business.

I don't know if this could be the problem since the modem led's blink, but quite often when motherboards are replaced the techs don't bother to change the cables going to the external com parts. This is a HUGE problem because different manufacturers use different pinouts for those cables. If you got a box with the motherboard look and see if there are cables in there and try them. If you look in your case and the cable look old that could be your problem. In this case I would go back to the shop who did your work and ask them for the right cables for that mainboard.

Thanks to all responses. I have reinstalled WIN98 & fitted internal SM56 modem & now troublefree connection but at 2400kbps. Looking at other topics I think this choice of modem was a mistake. Cheerio.

Hi: Your modem uses either X2 or FLEX protocol. Go to http://www.56k.com and search for info, this is a very good site. Now you need to try to add an initialization string to the modem which will give it a better connection rate. This will involve trial and error. Also download a copy of NETMEDIC to use while you try different strings, it will show you the thru put and your connection rate.
Good luck.

Hi: It may be me, but not sure what you mean by "3 cpu choices". Are you referring to X2, Flex and v.90 or ? Glad to hear you are connecting better.

Alongside modem icon in 'control panel' appears a new motorola modem icon. clicking on this brings up a dialog box unique to this modem. There are three radio buttons-low medium & high. All my troubles have now go away I am connecting at 45-50,000 usually. This is after I upgraded CPU frpm 90 to 166mhz
