Internet is down saying that it cannot display the page but I have net connectivity because email (outlook) works and all my mapped drives work. I'm getting an valid ip address. 172.16.2.x. Our company network does not allow us to ping external ip addresses either. So, I can't do ping tests.
When I put in an ip address of say msn or yahoo, I get the same error. So, I'm kinda ruling out dns. Funny thing is, the problem seems to jump from pc to pc. One day one user will get this problem, next day the same user/pc will be fine but another user will inherit the problem.
This is happening on 2k, and xp pc's. Not to nt boxes, at least not yet. I've installed netscape, mozilla, cleared temp internet files on IE too.
When I release the ip from dhcp and the pc gets a new ip address or if i set a static ip, the problem goes away. But
like I said, it'll jump to another pc. And sometimes, the problem will jump back to the original user that now has a new ip address.
Here's how our dns works.
dhcp assigns the ip and the dns server. Our internal dns server points to our ISP's (AT&T) DNS servers that does our DNS. I can ping my internal DNS servers fine when this happens. And this is happening to 1-2 pc's at a time and not to all our pc's.
Also, I can get to our company's web page but not to anywhere else. When I type in a webpage, its says it connecting to 207.68.171.245 (msn) but I never get the web page and eventually it'll say can't display the page.
don't think its a hardware problem (client pc, hubs, routers) because after I give it a new ip address the problem goes away.
Is it something with our dhcp server but I can't find any knowledge base on this particular problem. We've restarted the dns and dhcp services to no avail.
