I am trying to install a upgrade version of Win98 on a new home built PC but I always get a GPF error 'W89SETUP.BIN Standard Mode: Bad Fault in MS-DOS extender or Invalid DPMI return from MS-DOS extender'. It always happens after the initial ScanDisk function of the installation. What does this mean? is the DOS enviroment bad?. I have a K6-2 400 mhz, WD 10.1 gig HD, Smartandfriendly Speedwriter plus CD-RW on a BMC motherboard. I use a Win98 start up disk for access to the CD-ROM when doing this cause the CD ROM drivers are on a CD. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

If i were you, I would boot the new machine with the disk. quit to the command prompt after it initializes the cdrom. then copy all the files from d:\win98\ (d:\being the cdrom drive) to a direcotry on your harddrive. MS reccomends installing Windows from the harddrive. for one, its much faster because the access/seek time is faster on a harddrive. When you type "setup" at the c:\ prompt type it like this:
c:\Setup /IS
this will skip the scandisk. There are other options you can skip things with (type setup /?). This won't fix the problem, but it will skip scandisk. you could also try to reformat the drive and run scandisk (let it go through the surface scan--will take forever, but will find any physical errors)

thanks for the advise, I will try this ASAP. My HD is currently formated at 10.2 gig, should I partion it to more smaller sections or does it really matter on the space requierment. Thanks
