Mechwarrior 4 start up hang

I got the Mechwarrior 4 collection the other day. Mercinaries runs fine, but I can't get Vengance or Black knight to run at all.

I install the game, and when I click play the program hangs on a black screen. I tried setting the short cut to windows 2000 and 98 mode, neither worked.

I am running XP home SP1.

Any idea how to tackle this?

I've had all mentioned games, although none I can install anymore thanks to various CD problems. I remember having that happen to me before but I'll be damned if I can remember the solution. Did the Readme give you any clues? I do know that I had to reinstall all the games (in published order) to get mercenaries to work, but the other one and add-on caused me some grief before that, just I can't recall how I solved it. You can try the orderly install, though IIRC it had something to do with the drivers and direct X.

How much did you pick the whole lot of them up for as a pack, and where?

You could try their forums or shooting them off an email.

Funny you should say "install in published order." I uninstalled MW4V and MW4BK, and suddenly Mercenaries doesn't work any more.

The package is being sold as MW compleation for $20. I got mine at EB.

I just saw the compilation yesterday at Bets Buy when I picked up Riddick and Rome: Total War. Both great games and I'm glad I picked them over the mechwarrior pack - not because it's bad, I've just played it so much that it can wait a bit longer before I actually really want to spend money on it again.

Have you tried installing just MW4 and the add-on Black Knight? With EVERYTHING from the bloody combe uninstalled?

I'd hit up the official forums if the readme hasn't helped (when has one helped?) as it's been many months since I had to fight with the games - I remember I did, I just can't remember what I had to do (living up to my name I see). What I've mentioned in these two post is all that I can really even think of helping you with.

Oh, and the reason MW4 Mercs doesn't work now that I think of it is that the engine core is still the same, so they probably are sharing stuff or a sloppy uninstall program FUBAR'ed the files or the reg.

One would think that Microsoft Studios would be able to make an uninstaller work effectively with their own OS.:rolleyes:

I can't install SP2 (and I've tried EVERYTHING, including dealing with MS for quite awhile). I can't even install updates automatically or manually (with ease) as it won't ever detect my OS on a clean install even (no cards other than graphics installed, and even then I've tried both ATi, and nvidia, multiple dirvers, stock speeds, etc). The only thing I haven't pulled is my controller card (and both the man. and MS have said the card isn't a problem with SP2).

Patching is a REAL pain when you have to just enter your OS in the search field and wade through 400 results of things you don't even own that are MS products to find 5 of patches that you do. Lovely.

Yes, my copy is legitimate and I've tried a second copy (legit as well that I pulled from my other computer). I've emailed each hardware vendor for my system and none have said they have had any serious issues with SP2 and it's moot anyhow as I've tried it barebones as mentioned without success.

The one that i use for online purchasing and confirming such purchases has SP2 on it fortunately. Won't do it on this one as I've ripped Kerio out as a firewall as all it did was crash my system at random (several times a week). Running Zone Alarm right now, but I'd like something I'd have more faith in instead of something I was forced to run.

don't bother patching it or fixing it

since it always needs a Format and Install clean for things like WindowsUpdate or SP2 to install properly... :rolleyes:

like you, i just had each of these issues mentioned in each computer.

then after a clean install, everything works... :mad:
