I am getting ready to buy a pc from Dell and I want alot of memory because I am a computer science major and I have a lot of things running at once heres the Question? On the online store for Memory options I want to chose: 256MB 100Mhz Sdram (1Dimm) Real question is what does the "(1Dimm)" mean.
They also have 2 and 3 dimm options can anyone help me?

I'm not sure what it means when they say 1DIMM, 2DIMM, or 3DIMM. It could mean that the memory is distributed between 1, 2, or 3 Dual Inline Memory Modules. I would say it doesn't really matter...

As long as it's a lot of memory and 100Mhz, it's cool.

They give you the 256MB on one 256MB memory chip or 2 128MB chips (don't know how they'd manage 3... maybe 128+64+64)

It only matters if you want to buy more ram in the future. Most computers only have 2-3 available DIMM slots for memory. If you have the extra cash, get the 256MB DIMM.

Keep in mind, diagnosing a bad Sdram will be MUCH easier if you have 2-128's.

All that memory is pretty pointless unless you are gonna be running windows NT4. Win95 only caches 64mb so alot of that memory goes to waste. Benchtest have been done with win98 on machines with 128mb and 64mb and there is barely any difference in performance .... multitasking will be a bit better but go for NT and utilised the hardware your buying.

DSEG, you are mistaken arent you? It is the Intel TX chipset that can only cache 64M, a P2 or Celeron can cache up to 4G ram.

Win9x will cache up to gigabytes. The Win98 is much better at file caching than Win95 but if manually set at 1/4 the ram size, it makes a huge difference. This is done by making a couple of statements in the system.ini file, under the vcache heading.

I have 192M ram, mine looks like this:
