start up problems

I have a Celeron 366 and Shuttle 661 running Win98. Frequently when I turn it on, it does a short startup sequence and then the screen goes blank. I have to hit reset to get it going then go to safe mode a couple of times before it's running properly. I'm almost certain it isn't the monitor.

Check your video card or monitor refresh settings , and make sure that they are not set too high for your equipment. Sometimes this causes the late blank screen .
