Hi, i'm trying to Upgrade a Pc with more ram memory. It is a Pentium 166mmx.
It has a Vx-Pro Motherboard and 2 8mb ram Simms (total=16 mb ram). Using right now 2 of 4 Simm slots.
What is the best thing i cand do to upgrade this machine to 64mb ram?
can i use a single 64 mbram dimm?. Can this dimm be a pc-100 dimm?
Thanks in advance

The pentium motherboards use 72 pin simms
that are linked.
This means you have to insert your ram chips in pairs. So your best bet would be 4x16 meg chips.
The later motherboards run 128 pin ram chips which don't have to be fitted in pairs.

If the board has a Dimm slot, go that route. Simms have risen in price so the dollar per megabyte would be better buying a single 64MB dimm than any combo of simms. RAM prices all around have been rising so that may change in the near future.
PC-100 dimms should work in a VX-Pro chipset board, but of course they would not operate at 100Mhz. They will work at slower speeds though. Some boards do have a little trouble seeing newer dimms as the correct size, but I've seen that mostly with Intel chipsets. rather than the VIA chipset you likely have there. (VX-Pro is a sort of an abiguous name usually attached to the VIA VP2 chipset)

Arent u not supposta mix SIMM's and DIMM's on the same board? Cuz youll fry the DIMM's at the 5v that the SIMM's work at. Either way if he had DIMM's He probably woulda got a DIMM already since SIMM's cost so much more than SIMM's.
Just dont wanna see more fried silicon.

Yeah, that is a point to consider. I was thinking just ditch the two simms in favor of a dimm if a slot for one is available. If there is not a dimm slot (longer than the simms, usually black.) on the board, buy a couple 32MB EDO simms.

the thing is YES YOU CAN USE DIMMS WITH SIMMS but it cant be SDRAM..... its 3.3volts while the EDO/FPM is still 5volts like all simms
