I have 2 dvd players and one in my computer and and xbox.
my burnt dvd plays perfectly on x box and computer but jumps and skips like crazy in both stand alone dvd players. Does this have something to do with the read cappabilities of the stand alone players?
Thanks in advance

It could very well be. If the standalones are somewhat old, they might not read burned DVDs as well as the xbox and PC dvd drives. Try a different brand of DVD media, and see if that helps.

Most set-top DVD players prefer DVD-R media. Some prefer +R. Even the newest players seem to refer one or the other - rarely both.

My stand alone players aren't too old maybe a 2 years.
My burnt dvd is 8X Maxell DVD-R. Can you recommend and particular brand or should I try DVD+R.?

My Panasonic won't read +R or even SVCD, it reads -R and VCD's fine. The reasons are probably intentional and a result of the DVD-R forum trying to prevent copy infringement.
Anyway, I use Taiyo Yuden -R media (4x media burned at 8x) and haven't had any problems with reading them. In fact, I did a lot of research before buying a spindle of Taiyo Yuden.

I think I'll try burning a dvd+r and see if my player can read it any better. If that fails then I'll try a different manufacturer.
Thanks for your input.

You will then probably find that the x-box won't play the +R discs.
Playstations play +R
X-box -R
For the standalones check the manuals to see what they can replay. + / - or maybe even no copies.

Some of the cheap media can cause playback problems, but most decent brands will not lead to problems.
What you need to do, is just trial and error, see which works for you.
If you are trying to play a -R disc on a machine that won't play -R, it will skip, or play only in black and white, no sound. It all depends on the combination of disc and player.
I find myself very reliable are Platinums (+ and - ) or Arita's (+).
