I am having a problem sharing a printer/plotter in Windows 98. I added the file and printer sharing for MS networks service, went into the printer properties "sharing" and can type in the shared name but when I click on to add users the following message appears: "you cannot view the list of users at this time. please try again later." How can I get around this?
Note: I do not have any problems sharing printers on systems operating on Win95. Somebody please help.

What kind of network is this? Peer-to-peer, NT, Novell, etc.

If you are using W98 to share the printer, just give it a share name and if you want, a password. There is no need to specify users.

It must be something the network administrator has set in system policies because it will not allow me to any further than asking for a share name. When I click on ok it tells me I haven't listed anyone to share with and that I need to select them or it won't be shared. I've never seen this before. Maybe it's a security thing in Win98? I'm calling the network administrator on Monday.

Try changing the Network accesscontrol to "share level accesss". It sounds like it may be set to "user-level access". This is available by opening your network control panel.

Thanks, I tried that. It appeared to allow me to share out the printer since it asked for a password and showed the printer with the "hand" as if sharing. But when I tried to access it from another machine it would not allow me to do so. It says there was an error writing to it and that network access is denied. The network administrator informed me I have full rights. Must be something in the registry or somewhere else. There was an article in TechNet (PSS ID Number: Q177607). I tried what it said but still no luck. I am at a loss!

If you have tried what I said on your other post and still no go.. then what you will have to do .. is this.. go to the workstation with the printer.. logon as a normal user WITHOUT admin rights.. and then do the share.. then go to the other system and try to access that printer.. had the same problem when I was trying to copy something from the citrix TS.. to a 98 workstation.

I did try your suggestion but it didn't work. The only problem I have when logging on as the user with no admin rights is that they are denied access to Network Neighborhood properties. And, when the user is logged on the sharing is unavailable, I think, but I'll check it tomorrow to make sure.
