U.S. West Megabit DSL is available in my area. $29.99 for 256k and $49.99 for 512k access....etc... Is this good for online gaming? I play alot of Half-life, TFC, hopefully the finished Quake3. Want to really get the pings down. Has anyone here had any experience with them? Should I get the external modem $45 more, or the internal PCI? The external still needs the NIC right? Thanks for any replies...

Hey...Im pinging ~190 right now on mmy 40k Connection. I wish i could get DSL for $29.99 even if its only 256k but DSL aint available here. I wouldnt pay 20 bucks extra for the extra bandwidth tho. Just my 2c.

Both speeds are good for online gaming. 512k (oviously faster) and 256k will greatly improve online gaming playability. I'd say go for the 256k because that will be plenty fast for any game out there. To sum things up DSL is excellent for online gaming. If you invest in one I promise you will not be disappointed. I'd get the internal if it will only be used for 1 computer. DSL IS THE BEST CONNECTION TO HAVE AS FAR AS RELIABILITY AND PREFORMANCE. Get it if you can afford it. Online gaming will be completely smooth just like playing a single player game.

I'd go for the extra $$s for the external modem. I've not had first hand experience with the internal model, but I hear it throws off a fair amount of heat compared to a network card (which you do need for it, yes) and that rumor makes sense to me. It also makes it easier to add multiple IP addresses (if your choice of ISP supports it) later down the line.
256k should be enough for gaming purposes, but as always more is better. I run around 50-100 ping in Q3Test with a USWest/local ISP 256k DSL line right now. Lag is never a problem unless it is on the other end. If you are using a dialup link now, you'll be in another world with just the 256k line.
I like DSL and all, but I have to say that I'd take a tried and true T1 line for speed and stability falls into the 'Best' slot for me. Of course DSL spanks a T1 for the Bang-for-buck crown, which is where all of us are really at these days.
I think you should go with a cable modem from comcast if you live in one of the participating cities...
I download at around 50 to 200 kilobytes per second and I ping in Quake2 at around 100 or below...
Also its resonably priced and much faster than dsl....

I went ahead and ordered the 256k Deluxe DSL and the external modem (I want to hook up my home lan to it). I should recieve the modem on 8/14 and the line will be properly configured by then also. I currently have a 56k modem (IDT isp) and access at 48k, my pings are usually 210-275 for half-life. I'm just tired of those low pingers whipping around me and kicking my ***. I'll post again once I get setup. Thanks for all the replies.
