Hi Everyone,
Thanks to Mntsnow my CD-burner is working fine for the most part. But I have a question. It takes about 50-60 min to copy a 5min long music cd to a recordable cd (It's a 2x2x6 HP7200i). I tried to tweak my cd-rom and other drives my enabling DMA and to my surprise!! The next time a tried to copy a song from a music cd to a recordable cd it took less then 3mins (transfer rate for my CD-rom went from 20kb/sec to 300kb/sec) I couldn't believe it!! But I tried it again and it went back to 20kb/sec?????? I have no idea why this is happening. The CD-rom is a 44x and all my HD are in DMA mode.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening. I've tried copying to the recordable cd several times and it always does it at 20kb/sec.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Tom

Hey ThomasT!
With what software are you having this problem? If you are using Adaptec;s EZ Cd Creator as couple of settings could be set wrongly. I would doulble check to see if it is 1. first copying it to a "folder on your harddrive" then to your burner (CD to CD) becuase if it is, it will take twice as long to copy as it reads from the cd then writes to the harddrive then reads from the harddrive then writes to the burner.
2. double check to see what speed your burner is set to work at it will have options of 1x(74 mins for full burn) 2x (36 mins) 4x (20mins) ect.
3. and is your software set to "TEST THEN BURN" ? this is the "default" setting for the Adaptec software. so it will go thru the whole process of "trying" to copy the CD to see if the hardware can "keep up" WITHOUT burning the disk and if it passes that "test" it will then REDO the whole process again but this time BURNING the cd.
I personally DONT "copy first to harddrive" when doing a CD to CD burn (did the first couple of cd's to make sure everything was working properly but since then strickly CD to CD) I double check what speed my burner is set to burn at each and everytime before starting.
I will watch for your further postings
Good Luck

Hi Mike,
Yes I'm using EZ CD creator. I'll check tonight to see if I'm copying to a folder first (I think I might be). I know the burner is set at 2x speed (max). I've also stopped testing before burn.
What I don't understand is why it copied so fast (300kb/sec) that one time and won't do it anymore. I know it shoulded take 50mins to copy a 5min song.

Hi Mike,
I looked at my EZ CD creator settings and I don't have any idea how to determine if I'm copying to a foler first. I thought I new what setting you were talking about but when I go into the program I can only find a setting asking me were I want my temp. files...but I can't find any option regardind direct copying.

ThomasT,
Where I was refering to was "tools" then CD Recorder propertys, (on EZ CD Creator). This was for checking the speed of youyr burner.
The other place to check for "direct" copying is "tools" and then "options" then "general" tab. and that is were you check to see if you are copying to a "place on your hard drive" first. (if it is not checked then you will be "directly copying from the "source") wiether or not it is a CD or files from your harddrive. Then I would check your settings on the "advanced" tab. (mine are set to "optimal and fastest"
you might also want to run the tests from the "tools" then "system properties. you only need to run these if you have changed your computer setup since last testing.
Good Luck

Hi,
I've unchecked "use window/temp directory" but then it highlights the path to place the temp files. If I try to leave the path empty it will not let me close the window. I've tried copying after unchecking "use windows/temp directory" and It still copies to the HD first before burning the CD (perform test is alos disabled".

Hmm,
I would have to suggest that you Uninstall the software....reboot and then reinstall the software....sounds like something in the registery is not getting changed when you change the settings.
Sorry for not having a better answer than this at this timem http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
