Ok... I Have everything needed for a LAN Party (So I believe)

2 computers (Desktop and a Lap Top)
Router
Modem
Network Cables -

Now... I have a few questions

A) Is it Possible to directly connect the Desktop to the Laptop
and Transfer files using only the network cable?

B) Do i Need an internet connection to have a LAN game?
Example: Counter Strike:Source

C)If the laptop and desktop are connected to the Router
And a Cable Modem is connected to WAN... Can you LAN this
way?

And if you have any tips regarding LAN gaming hit me with them!

Thanks ALOT!

A) yes, but you need a crossover cable.

B) No, but you do need TCPIP protocol.

C) you are on a LAN when both systems are connected to the router. they are in the same IP range. The router is the gateway out of your local network.

if you can connect to the internet, then you have tcpip installed. it's a default protocol in winxp. you didn't say which OS you had.

According to Steam's site, you do:

* How can I have a LAN party or similar event using Steam?

Any Steam game, when played on a LAN or otherwise, requires that each individual client be able to authenticate via the Internet.

At a LAN party, this means that Internet access must be available to every machine on which Steam games are being played.

If desireable, the network administrator of such an event can limit internet access to only the TCP/IP ports which Steam needs. These are:

UDP 1200
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
TCP 27030 to 27039 inclusive

At large events, it will be necessary for each attendee to let their games fully update before attending to avoid taxing the shared internet connection with too much content delivery.

That flat out sucks... i guess this prevents people from using 1 Steam ID on 16 computers...

you obviously don't know networking. tcpip is a networking protocol. it's not an ID number.

Wow you are a smart one... If i knew about networking... why oh why... would i create this thread about it?

Failed Attempt Number - 2

But since you are so Knowledgeable... instead of being a smart
a s s... why dont you give some direction as to how i would set up a LAN game. I came here for help... not to have someone knitpick at what i ask.

Sorry if there was a misunderstanding, but I answered exactly what you asked for. TCPIP is the protocol and it is installed by default. If you meant a network address number, then that's an IP. Even that wasn't what you wanted to know. You wanted a STEAM ID. I'm not a mind reader.

to find your IP address go to network connections, when you are online, right click on local area connection, click on status, click on support, your IP address is written there. There are probably easier ways to find it, but if thats what your looking for, this is one way.

Default means its already on there... There is no need to "obtain" it. Default = already obtained

Yeap! So just install the OS onto your computers (I assume they should be installed already). Fix up the router, and hook your laptop and desktop to the router using your network cables (straight network cables, not cross cables).

You would need to get another copy of HL2 to network, based on the information the guys gave above.

Just post back if you require more help. Frustration doesn't help here, and Midknyte wasn't trying to knitpick at your questions. :)

Peace! :t

What ever the case...

you said i need TCPIP and now that i know i have it... how is a LAN game started?

What do i need to do to start a LAN game

you obviously don't know networking.
Hello? It's already installed with winxp.

Yeah knitpicking was the wrong word... It was impatience and lack of manners. Just wanted to clarify that it coulda been put nicer but its water under the bridge now. All love from this end ;)

I didn't think that I was being mean or anything, but I'm sorry if you were offended. You kept asking the same question and I gave you the correct answer.

It depends on the game you are playing, but there is usually an option for a network or LAN game within the options menu. One system in your network would have to host the game, while the other connect to it. Each system would have to have it's own copy of the same game. You can ask specific game questions in the gaming forum.
