Does anybody know what file or files HP puts on their HD's or in their bios chips so their systems recovery disks will work?

I worked on HP machines for well over a year. I've never had ANY trouble running a recovery disk after a hard drive was replaced. System boards were a different story. The system board (most likely something with the BIOS) had to be tatooed before the restore would function without error.

Thanks drizzle. I appreciate the information on the HP mobo's. How did you go about "tatooing" the system boards to
make them work?

If I remember correctly the 'tatooing' software can be downloaded from their website. Depends on which model you have. And the software isn't hard to use or understand.
