What is the difference between DVDR +, and DVDR -? Which is preferable to backing up movies and such? :t

As I understand it the +R discs can have their "book type" set differently from what they are, if your burner has this capability. Often referred to as the "bit setting". In other words tell the drive to record the disk and mark it as a "dvd-rom" disc. This will allow the disc to play in older set top players. NEC has their new model 3520A out. This seems to be the best one currently available according to several reviews I read.

Either type will backup or record DVD's. What matters is if the DVD player you want to use for playback is compatible.

DVDrhelp (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers) has a database of players you can search.
