My friend has an AMD 1800+ that is supposed to run around 1.3 GHz. He was overclocking it last week and he said it was working great at 150 FSB. I was over and he wanted to see if he could go higher so he put it at 158 and saved the changes. Now it will show the display when you can press "Del" to access the BIOS but it hangs after that and nothing happens. Sometime after about 10 or 15 shutdowns it will start back up but it will be downclocked to 100 FSB according to CPU-Z and Everest. Plus he can't get into his BIOS to change it back.
He wants to know how he can get back into his BIOS to change it because every time he tries it, it won't work. If there are applications that will forever change it like Third-Party utilities please let me know so I can tell him.

Thank you...

The watch battery looking thing?
I'll feel stupid if you say yes. But that's just me.

I think your friend better read up about overclocking more if he didn't know how to clear the bios. Your computer is not a toy.

I know. He thinks he's intelligent or something. I'm still reading up on it myself. He did get it working and he put it back to 150 FSB.

Also let your friend know that he can ruin his video card, pci card(s), and corrupt hdd data if he doesn’t know what he’s doing. With the wrong chipset he’d be raising agp and pci bus which can cause major problems\damage if he’s not careful.

His PCI/AGP is locked. So he doesn't have to worry about that. Thanx for the concern though. And can Moderators delete posts? Maybe Midkytne can delete "Well up above." I made a mistake.

If you click edit you can delete your own post. It has to be within 10 minutes.

Edit: What kind of mobo does he have?

To be honest I really don't know. He lives 30 miles away so I don't see him very much. I know it's some sort of an Asus though. Sorry 'bout that.
And I didn't see the larger-than-life delete button on the upper right. I'm so slow. Oh well.

Are there any other ways to clear a BIOS?

Usually there is a jumper located around the battery that you can move over for a couple of seconds then move back and it will set it back to the defaults.

Oh. I was reading about something like that. Now it makes more sense.

If it's a 1800XP then it's very likely a Palimino core like the one I have in one of my other machines and it sucks big time at overclocking so you are not going to be able to clock it very much higher than default.

That pretty much hits the nail on the head. I don't know why but it runs real smoothly at 150 FSB. But mine gets a better PCMark 2002 score though.

your memory stick can still handle the FSB clocking that's why it still run smooth.

ok...AM I the only one that has heard "hold the insert key down when powering on" resets the bios to factory spec?

works on most mobo's and is a lot easier then opening the box for a newbie

That's a good trick frog. It don't work all the time though. I've seen boards fragged so bad that removing the battery overnite was the only way to get em straight.

And if that's an old 1800A it won't clock worth a crock. Run it stock.

He seems to be fine. I just got back from his house for a staying a few nights. It seemed to be playing games okay. I brought over DOOM 3 and it ran fine. And with Half-Life 2 on the highest setting. He has a pretty good video card in it (Powercolor ATi Radeon 9700 Pro).
I don't know. Some people get lucky with their setups and some not so lucky. But 150 FSB is quite a jump for something 4 years old. He really should get an ID for this place.
