Please help optimize 33.6 modem

I was given a 33.6 modem. Win '98 identified it as an AVID 33.6 PNP. Never could find that manufacturer's drivers. I used the drivers I found for the PCtel 288-IA chip at www.wellmodem.com.tw. Anyway, it works, but it connects at 28.8 best. Best download speed so far is 2.5 kps. I did the regedit.com suggestions to optimize MaxMTU, etc., but didn't see any noticeable improvements. Can this modem be upgraded to .v90? Are their better drivers? It's a winmodem so can I use my CPU (k6-2 400) to make it run faster/better? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I've been visiting zoltrix.com because they had a 33.6 modem that used the pctel 288-IA chipset. Thanks in advance.
