Hi,
Please can some advise me, a lightning strike blew my modem. I put a new one in and set all the drivers up for it, it seems to connect as it should, but I have a message come up saying "can not recognise server or can not connect to server" But the modem is running. But my web page or email is not working.
Thanks for your help

Have you contacted your ISP yet?
You may not have set the correct settings and there is no way any of us could know what they are either.

Hi,
Thank you for your email. Yes I have contacted my ISP, they gave me some settings, but they did not do any good, and at the rates they charge for these sort of phone calls I did not want to stay on the phone too long. I think I have tride every thing now.
I do not think there is any thing else I can explain about this problem. I think the next step is to change my server???????
Thanks for your help any way
Regards

How can your ISP charge for tech support to help you connect to their system?
Threaten to NOT PAY YOUR BILL and see how fast they help you.

If you are paying for a service and you can't use it, then you either deserve tech support or you can threaten to not pay the bill. If he screams loud enough, then he will either get help or he can move on to another ISP. I would then call the local newspaper and give them an interview on how bad the customer support is from that ISP.

Ooooh that is cool!:x LOL!
You sure your server didn't get zapped too? Or are you talking like, not a server PC in your building, but a web server or something?

Hi,
Sorry I am late in replying. Any way thank you for your replys.
First I think I would be in big trouble if I did not my pay bill, it would be great if I could get away with it tho:)
The old modem came from a small brown socket on the MOBO (not the AGP slot) any way I replced it with a PCI slot modem. It went in fine and all the drivers were recognised straight away.
It connects to the server as it should, and the server states that it is connected, but it will not open the home page?????
Thanks again to you all
Happy new year

The brown slot way on the right?
Maybe your browser needs to be re-configured?
Happy New Year too!:D

Sounds like your talking about an AMR slot, a modem riser slot.
If it worked before but doesn't now after swapping modems it's unlikely it's a browser setting. Go to a command prompt and ping www.yahoo.com If it fails type ipconfig /all and post your results print here.

Um, actually that slot is called CNR. Hmm... Maybe there are 2 that look very close? LOL!
Actually he's right, unlikely to be a browser prob.
Have you tried the "repair" option on your connection?
Also are the drivers from your old zapped modem removed?

Um, I wasn't referring to your link. Could be a CNR slot. Could be AMR.

Oh... LOL.
When I first saw one of those itty bitty little modems I was like "wow and this is 56k?" lol. It was some small yellow modem that I thought went into half a PCI slot or something. Then I saw that mobo.

Hi,
Yes I have removed all of the old drivers from the old modem. I went in to device manager and the only thing there is the PCI modem I fitted. I have gone out and got an other modem but still having the same problems. I think it is down to the settings some ware, could Norton cause this sort of problem????
Thanks to you all for your help in this matter
With Kind Regards

Hi,
Every one, just to say thank you to you all for your help. I still have had no luck, but never mind.
I will end this thread now and get down to some book work to try and get around this problem. When I have sorted it I will inform you.
With kind regards
