I a previous post, I mentioned having trouble with my bios (the machine won't boot at all) I was wondering if I booted up a different computer, removed the bios chip from the working computer (while it was running), could I insert my bad bios chip and then flash it that way?

This may sound like a stupid idea, but for some reason it popped into my head last night http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, can do that actually. A couple words of caution though. Be very carefule removing the chip, if you happen to flex the motherboard enough to short out the back of it, you could end up with a second dead board. Ideally, you should use an identical board, but if that is not possible, try for one with the same bios chip in it. Peel back the sticker on the chip to check part numbers between them. Last, check your bios setup for (on the working PC) for 'System BIOS shadow' and make sure it is on. Most newer systems don't even give you the option to turn it off, but if it is there it must be enabled. That copies the BIOS into a section of RAM, so that when you take the chip out you don't take the code the machine is running out. A final note, just be very careful. Make sure the chip is in the correct direction and so forth.
