We're using Win98 (not the 2nd edition) and we installed a voice chat program from Yahoo. For some reason we can't speak in the room. The mic works, but after doing some trouble shooting I found out that the sound recorder isn't working so it we can't use voice chat. I've also tried to go out to Microsoft to trouble shoot it, but no help there either. Any ideas on how to get this working?

It turns out that "SoundOle" wasn't installed in SBLive. It is now, and I think that fixed the problem.

Let us know about the sound quality and how well Voice Chat works.

No, that didn't fix it.

Are you sure you selected the Mic as an input source for recording? The speaker icon should be in the taskbar in the bottom, double click that. Go to Options-->Properties. Click Adjust Properties For Recording. Make sure that Microphone is one of the Volume Controls that is checked, then hit OK. It should show the different recording sources, make sure the bottom Select check box is selected under Microphone. Hope that was it!

No, that's not it either. Voice gets amplified just like it should, nothing is too low or muted. No change in the straight line on the sound recorder window and although the tab progresses as it should, no sound gets recorded. Will try other inputs, but I am sure it will be the same problem.

I didn't reply to your post earlier because I've never bothered with a mic before and couldn't offer any help in this area. Seeing that you might had had a fix, I was curious how well this voice Chat worked.

The only thing I can suggest is general methods of finding the fix.

First, check the mic connection to the board and recheck the volume setting for mic. See that it is active and not muted. Check the recording preferences from the Mutimedia icon in Control Panel.

Second, check Yahoo's faq's or support section and see if it is a known software problem that has been addressed there.

Third, download and install the latest drivers and software for your sound card from the manufacturer's site.

Lastly, uninstall the Voice Chat software and try installing it again..

Hi!

Thanks for you help. We know that the microphone works. Its just that the sound recorder itself doesn't work. We've tried uninstalling and re-installing the sound recorder itself and that hasn't helped.

As far as the voice chat goes, we have 2 pc's it works great on the older PC. We have the original OEM version of win98 on the that pc, but on the one where the sound recorder isn't working we have the updated version of 98 and Sound Blaster Live.

Not getting any error messages its just not working. <sigh> So much for the New and improved Win98 <Grin>.

Any insight would be helpful!

Thanks!

We figured it out finally! Every time the mixer option was coming up with SBLive, it was for playback, not recording. Once we got to the record option (loudspeaker icon) and selected the mic, it works!

Sound quality is pretty good, but my voice sounds a bit "thinner" yet natural.
