What are the advantages to owning the new model PS2 over the other model's? I read that it can now play DVD-R/RW's is that also games or is it just movies? that's one of the reasons I'll get one if that's the case. Anyone have one and would like to tell me a little about it I would really appreciate it and thanks.

It won't play burned "backups" of games, be it CD or DVD based without being modded.

It really is just a normal ps2 that is network ready, and shrinked up. Same features and everything i bleieve, and it works perfectly fine.

I'm seeing on ebay that alot of the older model PS2's had read disk errors but maybe that's from misuse or a defective model.

Id get the newer one, why buy the oder version when you can get the newer model for the same price and network ready?.

Advantages:
Its small
Light weight
Network adapter built in
Disadvantages:
The power convertor is an exterior block now. You can't just go and buy a replacement or additional power cord. As of yet.
If you have FF XI, you can't install the hard drive. Harddrive is half the size of the new PS2, but thicker.
CD/DVD drive door is a flimsy pop top and will break easily if not careful.
I do own the PS2 slimline by the way. Bought it the first day it came out. Of course, I didn't know they were out yet.
All in all, if you're not worried about being able to install a harddrive in it, then the new PS2 isn't too bad.

Well it doesn't look like I'll have it till next year the way things are going. Nobody has it in the stores near me and online ETA's are next year and Ebay well they are just charging up the crankshaft for it.

Try Sears or Gamestop.
With Sears, you need to make them go look in the stockroom.

with my dumb luck they would have it. I would have never even thought of going there to look.

I was just over to see my friends today, seems very cheaply made, the top is about as flimsy as a $15.00 diskman and the thing gets hot anough to fry an egg if you play too long. We had an extended play of Burnout3 today and man that thing got hot. I think the fan in the original design was there for a good reason! It's nice that the online adapter is built right in and the cost doesn't go up, but you can tell where they skimped to cut costs for sure. I wouldn't be too worried about no harddrive support seeing as there is only one game that uses it, unless you get hdloader. It's a program that lets you load all your games and run them from the harddrive cutting load times and saving you from scratching disks.
If I was needing to replace my PS2 today, I'd look for the old version. Somewhere must still have them in stock.
Just my 2 cents:t

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is one difference between old and new... no place for a hard drive to be installed. Not a big problem for most, I'm sure, but a problem for anyone playing FFXI or the ultra-geeky playing with Linux on their PS2.

So I wonder if the new slimlines have been recalled at all for a heat issue? no fan come on they can't cost more then a few bucks and for Sony to skimp on something like that is just rediculious.

If I'm not mistaken the whole hard drive thing flopped in the US market (as is evident in the amount of games using it), but is flourishing in the Japan. :t

Don't have a heat problem with mine. And its kept in an entertainment center, with the door closed, while being played. Don't need my daughter yanking the controller cord out.:D

"I read that it can now play DVD-R/RW's is that also games or is it just movies?"
my ps2 and my friends (both old versions) could always play backup copies of my dvd's...i don't see why the new one wouldn't be able to play them.
I have never tried a burned ps2 game but i would imagine that a mod would have to be done for that

It will not play games on DVD-R, only movies or Home Videos.

Here's a update still haven't gotten one but found out some info. I didn't know before.
The older model PS2 consoles were discontinued in October of last year.
They (sony) are sitting on consoles trying to hype up the demand for it and make it look like it's a high end great demand system.
it has been recalled due to heat issues and broken drive doors.
I will not order from ebay or any online store cause of a lack of trust.
