This is sort of an interesting situation. I went to a friend's house who has three different computers (all WXP Home SP2) and cable Internet. Right now these computers are not networked in any fashion (no router involved) and we are attempting to see the Internet directly from the modem to any of three computers.

We can see the Internet fine using the USB port from the modem to the computers(s). When using the Ethernet port on the modem to the Ethernet Port on the computer(s) we cannot. We have tried three different modems and three different cables and still no luck from the Ethernet port.

I then bring one of the computers (a laptop) to my site and connect to the Ethernet port (thru cable modem and a router). There is no problem and I can see the Internet fine. Very confusing. Any great ideas???

Assuming that you set the modem(s) correctly to work with Ethernet you might have an Authentication problem.
I.e. the USB provides some form of password (may be specific MAC) that allow communication.

Link to: How to Fix Cable/DSL Internet authentication (password). (http://www.ezlan.net/broadband.html)

I would call the ISP and ask for help.
