I'm upgrading my CPU to a 3.2 Prescott. I've got a Thermaltake Spark 5+ on my 2.4 533 core, but I want to move them both to another platform.

I'm buying my upgrades of NewEgg, but I'm not sure about their selection of coolers. There's not a lot of commonality between NewEgg and the coolers I saw revued on OverClockers.com.

The Asrock P4V8T I'm also replacing always reported CPU temps 30 deg higher than the MSI 648 Max (blown up because of using the PSU that came with the case because I procrastinated replacing the 500w PowMax that died after a few month) that proceded it with the same CPU and AGP card. I think the Asrock always reported high because the only time I spontaneously rebooted was in the Age of Empires demo (something about that game must make it a great burn in tool). I have 4 80's in the front and one in the side, a 120 in the back, and three fans in the Vantec 520 PSU. I shouldn't be having trouble keeping the CPU cool.

Thanks in advance

You would still need to buy a fan, but you can put a 120mm bad boy on it. http://svc.com/thermalright-cpu.html It would end up being over your budget when purchasing a fan. Newegg wants $64.99 + $5.99 shipping for it. SVC has it for $49.99 and probably about $5-6 for shipping. I’ve bought a lot of stuff from svc, they’re a legit place. Both my thermalright hs came from there, much cheaper than newegg. They have the XP-90 and SP-94 for $39.99 each. At that price you could afford a 92mm fan and shipping and stay in your price range.

Edit: XP-120 is the hs I was referring to in the beginning that can take a 120mm fan.

Thanks guys, I thought this thread had died.

I found I got a wider selection if I used 478 as a keyword in my fan selection. Choosing 478 compatibilty in the drop down box on New Egg seems to exclude any fan compatible with multiple socket types.

I found a couple Thermaltakes in my price range.

Going strickly by airflow rating, the Polo pushes a max 75CFM (probably sounds like a Hoover)

I was also considering the SilentTower http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-043&depa=1
Another 90mm fan would put me a little over budget. Willy, I love the Peltier, but I'm not sure I want to give up a PCI slot for a CPU cooler. That, and for $100 I can go up to a 3.4 Prescott, though with adequate cooling I'd hope to OC more than 200mhz.

I bought an Abit VT7, with the height of some of these coolers, I have visions of my CPU snapping off :) My Vantec Stealth got trashed in voltage accuracy and output in Maximum PC's comparison this month, I wonder if that might have contributed to the CPU temp readings I was getting.

Thanks again for the input and I'll take those suggestions into consideration.

The fan isn’t too bad, you get used to it. I tell ya though, you walk by a dell and wonder if it’s on. I have one just like that on my thermalright hs. Once you start playing a game or some music you won’t even hear it. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-999-111&depa=1

Just make sure you read up on what you want coz some big $$$$ fans dont cool as good as the stock..
