slow wireless

My brother has come home for winter vacation and I find his laptops wireless to be extremely slow, it makes 56k look fast in comparison. I have Verizon DSL and a linksys befw11s4 router with two other laptop connected wirelessly that are fast and a desktop connected with a wire that is fast. Any ideas why my brother's laptop's wireless is so slow? Could have something to do with the router being 802.11b and his laptop's wireless being 802.11g?

Maybe he has some spyware on his laptop, or something else that needs cleaned up.

I checked for that and viruses as soon as I saw the problem. No dice.
