Ok, this is a prob I am having with my friends machine. The machine is a PIII-550 with 128 meg SDRAM. She was running a 33.6 USR ext sportster. I gave her a 56k USR internal winmodem (I know, I know). When the winmodem is installed and everything is loaded and WIN98 reboots, it's locks up solid. This is repeatable and not just a glitch. All modems are removed and windows detects and does it's routine fine but on reboot to finish setting up new hardware she locks up tight. Any suggestions?

There may be left-over/duplicate registry entries for the modem. On the Win98 CD, under drivers\modem\3com_usr\winmodem, there is a utility called Wmregdel.exe that clears the registry of all modem entries. Its one thing you can try.

If there are selectable jumpers for IRQ and Com addresses on that particular modem you can try changing those to the appropriate pins...but winmodem don't have that?

You can also try it in a different slot on the motherboard.

Note:
Wmregdel.exe may not always catch everything. In that case you have to check 3Com's site for a fix.

It could be a hardware related; unless you know it to be working properly in another system.
