Eyecandy and dragging time do not equal gameplay as this Doom 3 illustrates quite well.

The sad thing is, all of these titles were still probably more fun than Doom 3

I can't believe ID is making an expansion pack to Doom3. What now? Half the light, twice the behind you spawning?

In the doom 3 expansion, you get a weapon eerily similar to the HL2 gravity gun...

You must be joking....
I have lost all respect for those jokers at ID.
Beyond that, how are you supposed to use a gravity gun in 3/4 darkness?
Way to go Carmack!

New Weapons/Items:
The Double Barrel Shotgun - Goes Boom.
The Grabber - Gravity Gun.
The Artifact - Allows the player to manipulate time by slowing the world down, also increases damage and makes you invincible.
Environment suits - They will have flashlights mounted on them.

If you cant beat them (which they most certainly didnt with Doom 3) might as well steal from them

So now they see fit to add flashlights on the (HEV) suits?
That, and bullet time theft.
ID sucks. They were THE godfathers of the FPS. Now they suck. Time rolls on.

ID were the godfathers of engine design, and to give them their dues, still are.
However, they havent been the godfather of the FPS since they did Final Doom, everything from then on (excluding Quake 3, though again that was more a triumph of engine design) has been a vain attempt at trying to make a tired, ten-year old gameplay formula look interesting by dressing it up in a nice new suit

Sorry as bad as Doom 3 may be to some, there is no way it is on the same level as Big Rigs, that is just pure awful.
Someone Stupid

But Big Rigs isn't truly disguised as a game. You actually have the option of not spending money on it as it looks so bloody bad that you know not to buy it (and the fact that nobody here seems to have it shows that) while doom 3 was tech demo that is disguised as a game. And everybody payed for a tech demo when they thought they were paying for a game. That make Doom 3 beat them all. At least Big Rigs gives you a warning.

I think the "sims2" is a bad game, i loved the old sims, like sim citry 2000, 3000, simtown, simpark, those were the good sim games.

In the article at gamespot they mentioned taht Big Rigs had actually sold MORE than all of the gamespot "best games that no one bought"! People many times are fooled into buying games based on box art.

Doom 3 is a good game this is the same as ATI Vs NVIDIA silly remarks left n right, ye HL2 is better but come on the ending of that game has got to be one of the worst ive ever seen, its so lame its not funny. It’s like they threw it together in five minuets so they could have it finshed.

I heart ya..but I liked the ending ok...although it defintiely leaves a bad taste in the mouth..as what happens next..kind of thing..
Alot of games have sorry endings...for whatever reason... For some i guess HL 2's was not very good either..but theyare coming out with another sequel..so that can justiy it for the most part...
The same with movies..as I watch a tearjerker or something and then there is a cut scene and its over... filmakers disgression.
In FarCry we had the ole romance thing going on and finally meeting up with the girl at the end...which has been played out a hundreds of times....
Gordon should take Alyx out or ask for a date for HL 2 's ending...that would be sweet..... ( sorry i am hooked );)

Gamespot also said something along the lines of it was so bad they didn't even review it in 2003, when it was made, as they never heard of it then. Now how many of you heard GREAT reviews of Doom3 and saw fifteen hundred advertisements for the game in one form or another? I know I did. Now how many of you saw the same for big rigs? I know the only "review" I saw was from gamespot and quite a bit after the game was released. I love how they bash games they praised and seemingly forget about it. So after the game is no longer profitable, journalistic intergrity finally shows up?

In journalism...and especially in this field i want as much truth and unbias candor as I can get.... Tell it like it is...even if it does not agree with my views or anyone elses....
There is always two sides to every issue and some say points of view are like fleeting stars...
I agree that in the media...some will go with the tide and just make out like their writers or journalistic bomshells...but the real truth always gets told in one form or another, mostly due to the constant that there are real pepole in this world who have some real smarts and intuition..and leadership...
Where is Andy Rooney at a time like this....?
The good side of the gaming industry is that we have alot to choose from and for the most part games are alot better than in the recent past or distant past...,and more game makers are getting better at their craft.....
Again, this is due in a large part to the gamers themselves who demand better and let there voices be known.;)

The difference between Big Rigs and Doom III is that there are A LOT of people who like doom III. Perhaps not you and some other folk, but a lot of people liked it. I didn't read a single good remark about truly bad games such as BR, hell it even got a 0 and a "worst game of all time" from another reviewer.
Doom III may have been just a engine show for you but it did have a story (as much as you liked it or not), the game worked fine with not too many bugs, it looked very nice and made good use of technology, and was your typical shooter game. Sure it probably didn't live up to the hype, but much of the hype was created by the community from seeing a few still pictures and an E3 movie, not by the media. There is no way it could live up to the tremendous hype, the same with Half Life 2 which was beckoned to be the greatest shooter ever.

I think you are going to open yourself up to tons of criticism if you give any game a stupid tag like best shooter ever or of all time.... Its another unbias marketing cliche...
Maybe most of the previous genration gamers raved about the original HL ..long before I played it and I liked it alot ....and could see where they thought it was the best thing since instant oatmeal...,but I was not on the bandwagon then ..but do like or even love the latest edition very much..and it deserves to be in the top three .....abeit No.1 by reviewers majority.
HL2 is unigue on its own merits in that it does something that I believe they invented..which is the puzzle or map design of finding out wher to go and how to get there...which makes you stop and think alot ( use your brain and smarts )...and the graphics are very good...the best ....again I cannot say. Alotof games have superb graphics... D3 as superb in my opinion..and HL2's are a bit more pleasant on the eye...The ingame engine (new) works well with many unigue things invented ..first time in a game....this is the more telling sell point. The garavity gun is one of if not the best weapn and tool to come oout for a long while.... nice addition.
Because of the variety of games and the differnet styles out there..gives more credence to the many categories for awards...each in their own class...and yes..there has to be that overall winner title... In this case HL 2 ,which since it was released so late in the year..it is going to get some bonus awards for that..in that it helped in the balloting along with the marketing ploys...;)

Wait... so Doom 3 sucks? I played the demo and was in awe... I guess thats the best part of the game?
And what is considered the best FPS of all time?
or one of the best at least?

I feel that Doom3 was missunderstood to certain extent. Nobody could argue that it was not one of the best looking games at the time it was released, only Far Cry came anywhere near close.
What put people off were 3 things: darkness of levels, game play and over-hype.
For me, the darkness is just an integral part of the style of the game, though I agree that it can become oppressive after a while. The game play is somewhat linear and perhaps there is over use of the 'jump' factor, but for me the game play was just being true to the original, perhaps to a fault. Over-hype was probably the biggest problem as for many, Doom3 failed to deliver. In retrospect it's a solid game with great graphics - it certainly is nowhere near to being the 'worst game of all time' - that' just ridiculous.

Doom 3 isn't even close to being the worst game ever. It's a great game. I don't get scared very easily, and Doom 3 scared the living **** out of me on many occasions. And that's great and all... to a point. The game was so scripted that the second time you play it you know what's gonna happen and yet it scares the heck out of you anyways. I like to sit back and play a game begining to end, but with Doom 3 it's hard to do that because it's so scary. And there's just so little replay value because everything is scripted. The graphics in Doom 3 are the best there is right now in the gaming world, period. HL2's look better only because Valve, unlike id, knows how to use lighting effects. Doom 3 really was a good game though. It was pretty long, had lots of things to do and kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. But the main thing I was disapointed with is that it didn't feel at all like Doom... in all the other Doom games you grabbed a gun and ran around killing everything that moved. With Doom 3 you had to actually think about what you were doing, and it was more slow paced. But there's problems with every game, and that includes HL2. HL2 was WAY too short, had a horrible ending, dumb-as-a-brick AI (on many occasions my AI buddies would just stand there while they were being shot at) and worst of all, STEAM. But HL2 has qualities that make it an awesome game, just like Doom 3 does.

Well until i actually get a copy and play it through my opinion is on the doom 3 demo... and i have to say it was the best and scariest experience ive had in a FPS... I loved HL2 but i still prefer Doom 3 over it. The one thing that i was kinda not liking was the effect of the guns on enemies in doom 3(demo). Now if its different in the actual game than i stand correctly. But my opinion is... if you are 1 foot away from an enemy with a shotgun, and you shoot your opponent point blank in the head... There should be no question about your opponent should be on the floor out of commission. I mean for the monsters i can see... but the zombies... i dunno. But then again my opinion doesnt really hold water being that ive only played the demo...
CrazyCrusher
01-05-2005, 02:52 PM
If the demo does that then the Full is different, iv played Doom3 at least 4 times over now and the shot gun at point blank does put em on the you know what. And I would also agree it is the scariest FPS out to date, I have not played a game that scares me like doom 3 did. HL2 great scary not even close.

Yeah and it wasnt like i wasnt trying either... when i replayed the demo and i picked up the shotgun and the elevator goes down and those zombies attacked me... i stopped and just walked right up to his face and put the cross hair on his nose and fired... didnt kill him. Same thing with the pistol... they just go "Eh" lol.

#1 tip in Doom 3: The Shotgun is your best friend.
#2 tip in Doom 3: When using said Shotgun, always, always aim for the chest. Headshots do more damage, yes, but it's better to have more of those shotgun pellets hit then just a few hit him in the head. Also, I don't think Zombies can be killed with a headshot, but I may be wrong.
