AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - More than 80 percent of Dutch children aged between nine and 15 say they have tried alcohol and on average start drinking at the age of 12, according to a survey.
The teen Web site Kaboem (www.kaboem.nl) said Monday a survey of 2,500 young people found nearly 40 percent had their first alcoholic beverage with a parent.

Some 68 percent of Dutch 15-year-olds admitted drinking alcohol often and a third of respondents said that when they drink they have enough to get drunk.

As in many other countries, boys drink more frequently than girls, the survey found. Forty percent of 15-year-old boys said they had been drunk at least once.

The European School Survey project on alcohol and other drugs, published earlier in December, said Dutch youngsters drank more often than their peers across Europe and were among the most likely to binge drink.

Hey JM, when you was out here window shopping, did you notice most of the people where tourists (get plenty of English coming over for stag weekends etc.)

It's quite funny when you look in the red light district, all the booths are rented, and the later in the evening the more they charge for the booths, so if you go in the middle of the day, which is cheapest, there are a few frightening sights !!

It's not surprising they drink at an early age when you think that one of the things that the Dutch are famous for is wearing wooden shoes !!!

When I was 12 I was just starting to wear deoderant on a regular basis. How on earth do you start getting sloshed at such a young age?

It's a totally different culture over here, if you go out on a Saturday night in most of the disco's and clubs, if you are older than twenty you feel old. I know a lot of people with kids around 15 - 16 and they have to be in by about 02.00am on a Saturday night at the latest !!

Also what probably doesn't help is the fact that beer is quite cheap over here. A crate of 24 heinekens only costs about 10.00 bucks. Very common is what they call a " Schuurfeest" which involves a party in a barn or an adjoining building to a greenhouse, a pallet of beer from the local wholesaler so it's cheaper, about a hundred friends, and party till you fall over.

If you go to nightclubs over here they can check you drugs (xtasy etc) to see if they are clean before you take them !!!


It's what you might call an open minded culture over here.

I agree with the Netherlands atitude towards drugs and the people who take them, the goverment and churches should mind there own business.
