I had to reformat my hard drive, and now when I go to install Windows98, I get the message "SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module user.exe at 0001:1742" and if I click ignore, a few seconds later I get "Windows98 caused a general proctection fault .......etc."

This happens only after a few minutes into the install. I successfuly ran Win98 on this computer before this, till I kept getting a message about my registry and Windows would try to fix it, but never fixed it and I kept getting the message.

I used fdisk first, then formated. I tried this a few times but still get the error messages.

The system is running a Cyrix 200mhz processor, if that matters

What you need to do is go into the BIOS and DISABLE virus protection. During the installation of windows it has to write to the boot sector and if you have virus protection enabled in the bios it will cause this error.

Disable it and start over

Yes, it has worked, but I keep doing little 'tests' here and there. That's why I have so many post about it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I bought this barebone Cyrix system cheap. Oh, BTW, I did get windows to install ok. Turns out it was bad ram. Of course now if you saw my other posts, I now need a new BIOS chip
