Hi,
I have a Hewlett Packard 7200i CD-RW drive that's brand new. I've set it as the secondary slave (I have 2 HD's and a CD-ROM). The problem is that it will not function properly. I'll place a CD into the drive and it'll try to read it for about 10sec, then my HD light comes on for about 10sec and this just continues over and over. During this time, windows function at an EXTREMELY slow speed. The Adaptec DirectCD software also does not work while CD-RW is trying to read the disk.
I've tried 3 different brands of CD-RW and 2 brands of CD-R's. Even music CD's and commerical application CD's do not work.
Does anyone have any idea's???
I have a AMD-K6 2 450Mhz using a super socket 7 mother board.
Thanks,
Tom

Make sure all your jumpers are correct on your drives (single, master, slave, etc.) If these are correct then put it on it's own port (secondary) by itself.
Good Luck

Well ThomasT,
The first thing to do is reconfigure your drive setup to as follows
Primary Master = Boot harddrive
Primary Slave = CD ROM
Secondary Master = CD BURNER
Secondary Slave = 2nd harddrive
The reason to set them up this way is your OS(what makes your system work) is on the Primary channel and IDE only can work (interface) with only ONE device at a time. By having the Burner on the other channel it will not run into Buffer-underruns as frequently.
As for software I would personally get rid of the Direct CD software as it is junk (all direct CD type software) and is not very reliable on other systems other than the one you used to burn it on. I would continue to use the EZ CD CREATOR and others but dont use the direct cd.
I use to have the Hp burner and have since out grown it (went to the Plextor 8x20 plexwriter!). #1 When you go to burn a cd start the process and then DONT USE THE SYSTEM FOR ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL IT IS FINISHED BURNING! (goes back to the reason about IDE using only ONE device at a time)
#2 Turn off Virus scanning
#3 Turn off screen savers
#4 if you are first coping to a harddrive and burning the image from there make sure the harddrive has been defragged.
Good Luck...If you have any other questions feel free to post or shoot me an email

I had my IDE set-up as follows because of an earlier post you had.
primary master: boot HD
primary slave: CD-ROM
secondary master: CD-RW
secondary slave: 2nd HD
I just switched the CD-RW last night to secondary slave hoping maybe that would fix it. It didn't! (jumper are set correctly)
I don't think the software is the problem right now because I can't even use the CD-RW to read normal CD's or music CD's. Regardless of the type of CD I but into the drive. It does the same thing.
Is there any setting in the CMOS that I can play with?

Do you have DMA enabled? Some systems work better with it Disabled...If it is disabled try it enabled.
Are you sure that the CD's are clean without scratches or fingerprint smudges on the them?
Also you might try disabling "auto Insert notification" This would also be located in the "device manager" (open up device manager by right clicking on "my computer" and choosing PROPERTIES then the second tab that says Device Mnager then click on the + sign next to CD ROM then double click on the actual device you want to see the propertys of. then click on the SETTINGS tab from there you can check or uncheck the options mentioned before..when finished close out the windows by clicking OK and then reboot your system to invoke those settings.
Good luck!

Yes, the CD's I have tried are brand new. I beleive I have DMA enabled but I'm not sure. I'll check when I get home from work. I'll also try disabling "auto insert"
Thanks

Turning "auto incert notification" off dosn't help, and disabling/enabling DMA dosn't help either.

Thanks ThomasT,
I'm hitting a couple of other boards as we speak trying to come up with some more answers...Have you spoken to HP support? Have you tried uninstalling the burning software and then reinstalling it? I see you are using Win98 did you install the Win95 IDE bussmastering drivers for the motherboard? if you did uninstall the Win95 bussmaster drivers as Win98 already has IDE buss mastering support built in.
I will check back as soon as I come up with anyother ideas

Hi mntsnow,
I haven't tried re-installing the software yet but that's a good idea! BUT I think I MIGHT have installed the win95 BUS mastering drivers?????? When I get home all check. I know I installed some software from the mother boards software disk related to IDE but I'm not sure if it was Win95 stuff. I'll check tonight.
Could that be the problem even if all my other IDE hardware is working fine?
Thanks for the help!!

I noticed that I don't have a OBDC Data Soruce (32bit) icon in my control panal. I don't know what exactly this is for but is it something I need? I know my work computer has it.

ThomasT,
Yes it might still work with the Win95 buss master drivers but the Win98 busmaster drivers are better in the Win98 enviroment.
I am about out of options to have you try. What did HP suggest? Is it possable to get a RMA and try a different unit?

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I removed the IDE drivers that came with my MB and the CD-RWer works fine!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot Mntsnow!
It strange because the IDE drivers on the disk say that they are win95 and win98 drivers. I would have never thought to remove them. I was about then send this thing back.
You saved me a least 5 more hours of problem solving.
Thanks again for your help!
