Ok, I need to build a PC that will be used as a server in a company with only 7 PC´s. Some of them will be running NT 4 Workstation while the rest will be runnig W98SE. The server functions will be:

1) Store the data in only one PC, so the backup task will be easier to accomplish.

2) Be the e-mail and http server of the company for the future intranet.

Now the questions:

A) What processor should I use: Celeron 366-400 or PII-350? I was planning to use 128Mb RAM and a 8Gb HD.

B) What OS should I use: NT4 Server + IIS 4 or Linux Red Hat 6.0 + Apache?. We already own both of them so price is not a problem. The problem will be how to configure Linux to communicate with the Windows platform. I know that this cna be done using Samba but I had never done it. Any ideas?

Plase e-mail any reply to this post.

Thanks in advance.

Rafael

As far as processor's go, depends on the price your are willing to spend. I would go with the Pentium over the Celeron just because of my experiences with a dual Celeron server on a BP6. Celeron's are great chips, but not for servers. IMHO.
As for the OS's. Linux is nice and so is NT4, I guess it depends how stable an environment you need. NT 4 is gonna be easier at times and harder at times then Linux. Linux is alot more stable. Go with what you are most comfortable with, that is gonna be the easiest. I am not big on NT4 server so I am a bit biased.

Why do you want to mix 98 & NT?

What kind of security issues are you dealing with? How sensitive is the data?
