I recently installed Adobe Photo Deluxe and it "stole all my file associations (like it should) including .bmp. I now want to have this associated with MsPaint and have changed the association back to paint. My problem is this. I like to work from windows explorer to activate files and I can't. If I tru to open a file directly, I get the message that paint can't find the file. When I check the properties for the file all is fine and I am able to see a preview of the file....just like I should. The only way to get the file to open is to open up paint and then ask it to open the file.....
Is there any way to get my association back so that I can open the file with paint directly from windows explorer as I always have?

How did you change the association? Tell us waht you did.

Did you remove the association with Photo Delux?

I think this might work... find a .bmp file, any file, and left click it once, then hold down the left shift button and right click it, there should be a menu option to "open with" choose that and check the box "Always use this program to open this type of file" and find the MSPAINT program and double click it... the .bmp files should be re-associated...

If that doesn't work, or you don't want to do it, go to the run bar and type "winfile" It's the old WIN3.1 file manager! Click on the menu bar, FILE---ASSOCIATE, and then put in bmp as the extension and if the mspaint program isn't already listed in the bottom scroll bar, just browse for the executable.

I initially changed the association from windows explorer/view/folder options then removed the association with photo deluxe and told the .bmp to associate with mspaint.exe. As stated earlier, this worked in changing all the .bmp icons to paint, plus they would all open with paint already opened, but they would not open the program from the file itself...which I usually do. Another forum suggested the winfile approach exactly like WhoKnowsWho and I was able to change the "associate" there to run with mspaint. Now all of the .bmp files do activate the program, as they should. Apparently changing the association within explorer/view/options for .bmp files still didn't release the .bmp files from photo deluxe. Winfile did the trick. Perhaps microsoft should have included the "associate" within explorer like it does in winfile. Thanks for the help.

Go to start, settings then choose folder options. Click on file types then go to .bmp and double click it. Click open once and choose edit. Erase what it has for open with and type MSPAINT.exe, not sure if it has to be caps or not but mine is and choose ok then choose close then choose apply. If it still don't work let me know.

For any of your graphics programs, just put a shortcut to each in the Windows\sendto folder, then you can right click on any picture file, and "send to" whichever program you want. It's very handy!!

GB you missed my point.....Did you not see the "quotes" in my thread? I clearly said that it "stole the associations"...as it should. I'm sure most people know that nearly every graphics program wants all the associations it can grab, the last one installed being the king of the hill. Frankly, changing the association back to paint (a MS product)was my choice since I use a .bmp screen snatch program that captures my screen and shows or sizes better in paint rather than in adobe, which requires me to enlarge it every time I want to look at something. The problem arose when changing the .bmp association did not work properly, despite having all the correct parameters. The suggestion to use winfile worked since it actually showed that, despite the windows explorer saying all the association parameters were correct, they weren't as demomstrated within winfile, (which was more accurate that explorer). Don't worry about MS...they can handle the knocks. Besides, in this case, it probably was adobe not wanting to let go...........
