Here are Gamespy's picks for game of the year. I am somewhat amazed that D3 isn't even in the top 10 for game of the year. Sims 2 got on the list! Ouch, that must smart the uber geeks at ID. What a prestigeous failure that hide and go seek fest turned out to be.

Wow. Sims2 got best strategy game? That’s just sad. That must have been a popularity award. Kinda like how Yao Ming got the start in the all-star game. What a crock… Can definitely see HL2 winning a bunch and Doom3 not.

I have to agree with you, the awards was a crock of *^*&* in my book. I could see HL2 beating out doom, but not to even see it win anything? I would put that to younger gen kids not even playing the frist doom, most of the buyers being older and who have played it through the years.

Well, I now have three of the top ten games in my possesion..but of course they are the best ones....

Where do you see D 3 in the top ten? I do believe it should be in there as its easily one of the best games out this year.

I would have put FarCry a bit further up the ladder though...its just too good a game not to make the top five.

Also, a game I want to get and will next month ...Warhammer : Dawn of War
is right there as i knew it would be...

Got HL 2 today Yipee!!;)

#2 and #3 are both boring games.

Best racing game is cr*p, what a waste of my money :(

Agree with the best surprise award. I didn't even know about Painkiller, I ran across it accedentally. It was pretty fun, brought back memories of the best FPS ever - Blood.

Bought the green banana award winner for my girlfriend for christmas, hope she likes it ;)

The one award on there that I don't think anyone can deny is the best Music award. In my opinion Thief 3 was the game of the year. The asylum level made Doom 3 look like happy fun rainbow land.

Agreed, that level, and the game in whole, were very underrated.

Dunno, bold move on the part of the award givers if you ask me, if ID will insist on simply repacking a game they made 10 years ago in a nice whizzy new engine and expect it to suffice then they quite rightly deserve such a lack of praise

I have to agree with PacNW CE, I think it should have been in the top 10. I think it is a better game than Far Cry (and arguably looks better).

Need for Speed Under Ground 2
Doom 3

I have not played Half Life 2 yey, so I do not know?

Doom 3 sefinitely deserves its perks .....

Since FarCry is already on the list...no more need to say more about that....as in my opinion it strongly deserves best of 2004.

Having played Doom 3 over at least twice....I think ID software got shafted.

When D3 came out, I cannot remember a time with so much hype and even here at Sysopt forum, the talk and posts went on for quite a long time...with mostly amazement , and high praise.
It was easily one of the top three best games I have played over the course of the past two years or so.

I am playing HL 2 right now and while it is awesome in most all areas, so far I am out to lunch on whether it deserves the top prize...

I think in the overall industry, if there were other top list or awards on the same level....D 3 would be on every one..

Take for example Movies that come out and many very good ones do not even make it to the Academy Awards..mainly because its a snobbery class for gala impetulance....

How do the judging or this award scenario come about? Do they do a democratic polling from ALL the gamers or just their own in house team consensus?

I think everyone who liked HL2 held a bias against Doom 3 (maybe because of the whole underlying factor of nVidia vs. ATi) and vice versa. Whatever the reason, I've found that few people actually liked both. :t

I agree with you %150 that ID got shafted on this one, they should have gottin something for the hard work they put into this game.To call it a 10 year old game with a Whizzy new engine in my book is a silly remark. I liked HL2 and I dont have anything bad to say about it, but ID got stiffed on this one.

And to your Answer bob05 I agree with you totaly.

I personally appreciated different aspects of each game. IMO, Doom 3 was a much dark and scarier game than HL2 ( I loved freaking my sister out by forcing her to play the game :D ), yet I liked the storyline of HL2 better because I am just more familiar with it. In terms of graphics, both are up there, but the Source engine seems to beat the Doom 3 engine for outdoor scenes, and I am a fan of those.

The fact that D 3 was so much in the dark and basicly linear in design and did not allow for unscripted roaming of going off the beaten path made it suspect I believe to alot of critics.

The graphics in D 3 were on a very high scale and don't mistake the fact that it takes alot more picels per area to illustrate an environment(s) that are confining.... and light effects become increasingly important to show textrues correctly.

The graphics in HL 2 are very nice also...but different...and mostly in a larger scale.... At times they even look a bit faded to me..but that could be due to my VC..but they still look amazing for the most part.

Comparing...comparing..thats all anybody seems to be concerned with...but my views on this are welll known. Its like comparing appples with oranges. They are both fruit.. but one may be more well liked by some than others...and one is sweet while the other is more bland... ( but if you made a nice apple pie ,then this changes ) I do not like the whole idea of comparing......

Both a deserving games IN THEIR OWN RIGHT.... and worthy of top awards...

Markewting also has alot to do with how they are judged..which in my mind is silly....
Some very great games have come and gone overnight...and did not get the hype...but oh well ,its just money. Problem is the almighty $ is a must for an industry that many do not prorfit from greatly as the competition is fierce.;)

Anyone watch the Video Game Awards? It was San Andreas for PS2 that won the best game of the year. I wished it was HL2 but it won for PC, and Halo 2 for console. Great award ceremony, gotta love the hot chicks lol

Rabbitrunner51

yeah...i agree... it seemed more a showcase for the rap trap...

Rap used to be alot better than it is now...and i have never been much into it...unless theres some good rockin elements thrown in..

:D

The reason I am amazed D3 got the shaft was because of all the build up prior to it's release. Yeah, it was linear but the power of the graphics alone should have put it in the top 10. #1, no way, but top 10?

And for the record....

Rap peaked in skill back in the late 80s early 90s.

Eric B. and Rakim
Tribe (before copious ammounts of dope)
Black Sheep
Cypress Hill (read Tribe comment above)
DJ Quick
Public Enemy
Everyone accociated with N.W.A.
the list goes on.....

It all changed the day E-40 became popular. I blame that fat man started the non rythmic rhyming that spread through Rap like a virus. Even Chuck D started rhyming like a moron, a sad day in world history for sure.

The best today are all associated with Dre.

Its prolly not on the list and too late in the day for most, but i would give Chronicles of Riddick a mention.

Okay, HL2 was probably the best game of the year, but i already knew that that was on the cards even though i still maintain that HL1 was the better game - Riddick is the most interesting thing i've played this year in terms of pleasently suprising me, i was expecting another poor movie tie in but found an excellent though not groundbreaking game.

Maybe not GOTY then, but worthy of some sort of special mention

I think you are preaching to the choir here. You'll find very few people who will disagree.

For my money, HL1 was the best FPS ever made. It was revolutionary. I still remember my jaw hanging open when I realized the marines were acting as a coordinated fighting unit. HL2 is a very pretty game, with a lot of cool elements, but for innovation, it cannot hold a candle to HL1, and I don't think it ever could have.

There are some good rappers still out there, such as:

Talib Kweli (my personal favorite)
Mos Def
Common
De La Soul
The Roots
even Kanye West (although seems to be turning a bit mainstream)

All of the above speaks about real issues, not just weak subjects like money and sex.

This is from Gamespys top ten games overall...

Halo 2 wasnt bad, but like the original Halo, was nothing earth-shattering.

I've got a mate who is a proper Halo nut, loves the game, but he was massively dissapointed with Halo 2. I quite liked what i saw early on, felt as though the franchise had matured and progressed, but eventually found it becoming rather tiring and boring myself.

A few weeks later i then introduced said mate to HL2 and he basically said that it made Halo look like nothing in comparison
