I have recently gotten into the habit of running GRC's ShieldsUp every time I install a new bit of internet/networking software. So when I recently installed Skype (VoIP app) I ran it again. It said that telnet (port 23) was open.

This is rather worrying, but I'm not sure if it's Skype or my router, because I recently had to reset it and reconfigure everything, so I might have missed something.

I've looked through the router's numerous config screens and I can't find anything that suggest's that it's leaving port 23 open.

Is there a simple way to close this port? I've never had this problem before!

Thanks in advance,

PS I'm running XP Pro SP2, with WIndows Firewall on, as well as a wireless router which also acts as a hardware firewall.

This little free utility will give you some info/options.

CurrPorts, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

Skype doesn't need port 23 to operate. I would start by opening up the management console and disablng the Telnet service, if it is not needed.
It may also be advisable to scan for virus, or more particularly, a trojan which may have opened this port.

Well, cport didn't show any services using port 23, telnet isn't running, and trojan scan (as well as adaware and spybot) didnt show any malware, so.... i'm rather confused. I'll run a virus scan (avg) sometime, but if trojanscan didnt find anything i don't see what avg could find...

Thanks anyway, if you have any other ideas let me know!

Just close the port on your router.

Yeah lol, I know that's what I need to do, but I've no idea how close a port on my router, only how to open them! The router's config has no "telnet server" option and I certainly haven't forwarded port 23.

So how can I close the port?

Thanks again,
